Can anyone let me know which type of rock this is? It is white with tan specks (possibly a type of tiny fossil?) stuck all over it. I found it in my yard in middle Tennessee. Thanks!

Might be limestone. There are a couple of circular fossils in these photos but not enough visible for good ID.

You may find some better condition fossils inside of it.

After pounding this rock into several pieces back in July, I saved this chunk to come back to later. I now notice it does appear to have some type of fossil in it. Are these a type of bryozoan?

Ah, now I gotcha. Thank you for clarifying that for me. :P

I appreciate it! I was scratching my head over your initial reply, but didn’t want to bug you with a myriad of questions.

And these are . . . amorphous ?

Just how would they be described ?

They look linear, similar to tourmaline.

Thanks! :) Can anyone tell me why the minerals would have darkened after the rock was split open? Initially, they were barely visible in the chunk of rock, as in being the same whitish color. Now they are considerably darker and quite distinctive.

The image that comes to my mind is a layer of tourmaline pyrite in carbonate rock that I have. The crystals are better defined and darker in mine though.

Amorphous, rod like, stalactitic. But not a well defined geometric shape.

I see no evidence of faces or anything else I would call a "crystal"

So what geometric shape do You see - cubic, prismatic, rombichoida, trigonal....?

Also - what is "tourmaline pyrite"?

Loss of water, introduction to oxygen, exposure to ultraviolet or other light.

Without knowing what mineral(s) are present it is hard to say why it would change color.

If my identification is correct it's this stuff. :)

Looks like tourmaline to Me, where does the pyrite come in?

Either way , this rock looks nothing like BLT's piece to Me. First off it is not limestone.Second is the straightness of Your example does not fit the tapering curve seen in Her piece.
