I agree it's a tooth, but it doesn't look like anything i've ever seen.

Where was this found?

Try the burn test on it if you have doubts on whether it is prehistoric or not.

Life started in the ocean. And so did my interest in fossils;).

Railguy...

What is the size of this thing and is it possible to take a nice, sharp picture of the occlusal (chewing) surface?  That would be the darker end of your specimen.

Joe, theres the occlusal end surface. It doesn't appear to be there.

This item is concave on both ends.

What ever this is, it suffered cavities something awful!

In this pic the hole thing including the under layer seems to be broken. Almost looks like it's been cut . Working on more pics now.they'll be up shortly. Sorry about the pic quilt since I got my new phone I quit using my camera and the battery went bad.

Hold the piece above a flame. If You get a smell like burnt hair then it is modern.

I do not see a tooth in this piece, it looks more like a discrete layer that has the superficial appearance of the side of a tooth.

Although not always accurate, applying a flame to a piece of bone or tooth can help determine if it is a fossil or modern. If the piece gives off a smell like burning hair, then it is likely modern.
