ynot
Welcome to TFF! What size is this? Where was it found? Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." indominus rex
Agreed, location is needed. But to me it doesn't really look like a fossil. Regards, indominus rex Life started in the ocean. And so did my interest in fossils.
loveshack1207
So it was found on Morris Island, SC. We were shark teeth hunting (found many) and I found this fossil? It is roughly 1 1/2" long and 1/2" wide at widest part.
Vieira
For me looks like a little pice of a worn bone. some more pictures may help.
ynot
I think it is a phosphate nodule. (focused pictures of the end may change that opinion.) 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Shellseeker
I think it is bone from the texture, We must speculate on what the 2 indentations are.... Please get a photo in bright sunlight... and narrow in on the fossil rather than your hand. My initial thought was the tip of a dugong rib, but those indentations, if natural, would eliminate that idea.. could be the jaw of a marine mammal like dolphin, ALL Speculation, but "the game is afoot.." Fossildude19
Personally, I don't see any fossil here. But I'm not a bone guy, so, l'll defer to the others, here. I took the liberty of brightening and cropping a few of the pictures. Tim, As indicated above, I have found a number of dugong rib tips that look a lot like this.... bone marrow in the center and texture on the outside.. But that was the Peace River SW Florida, not Merrit Island SC 2 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
Fossildude19
I believe you Jack. That's why I leave it to people more experienced with bones. I was still working on my posting before I saw yours. Shellseeker
Need to bring in other Florida contributors to see if I am imagining something that is not there. Not sure what fossil it might be, but pretty sure it is fossil bone. @Sacha @Harry Pristis @Peace river rat @peacefossil @jcbshark The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
loveshack1207
This is the last picture that I have at present. Again it is 1 1/2" long, 1/2" wide. It was found on the beach in South Carolina, Morris Island. I am assuming that it is a fossil since this area is loaded with many different shark teeth and other fossils. I appreciate all of the input.
jcbshark
i think it looks like a piece of bone but can't speculate as to from who or where Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!
sixgill pete
I do not think this is bone. I find similar items here in NC at some places. I think it is geologic in nature. It does not look like any dugong rib I have ever found in N.C. Shellseeker
Well, it is all good. I have been finding phosphatic nodules and thinking they were rib tips.. About time to have a real ID.
