Fossil Rooms

This wing of the museum was opened in 1885. Many of the fossil in this collection was used for Darwin’s the Origin of Species.

Giant Salamander, when this fossil was found only the head and spine were visible, and was thought to be part of a human skeleton. Playing into the belief that it was proof of when fossils were regarded as evidence of the Biblical Flood. In 1811 however French scientist Cuvier chiselled a layer of stone away and revealed the front legs of a giant salamander.

Anything with the name "Museum of Wonders" has my interest. I especially like those type of places which hold natural oddities such as two headed creatures, bizarre deformations, forum members, etc., etc. You know, true freaks of nature. :P

I've been there. Great museum with a lot of historical pieces. They have the best collection of fossils from Oehningen, Germany among other goodies.

W.o.a.h. This is an amazing museum. The solnhoffen material is incredible! Is that turtle skull Solnhoffen? I've never heard of turtles coming out of there.

These are so common along the coast here we use them as utilitarian items such as coat hangers and towel holders.  I personally enjoy using them as a back scratcher.

Don’t leave it around small children, could be a choking hazard.

An amazing museum collection! I love the rustic feel, Looks like it could be some prolific collectors home. Thanks for taking us with you!

I noticed that too.  I don't read Dutch, but I see a word in there that is very similar to the German word for chalk, so maybe it is from the Cretaceous chalk.

Do you mean that one? Lemme translate the whole label for you.

Solnhofia parsoni     Gaffney

                                        holotype

Skull of a sea turtle

Upper Jurassic                  Solnhofen

(This object has been carefully prepped with acid to get it out of the hard chalk stone and described in detail by Parsons and Williams, 1961)

So yeah, a Jurassic turtle from Solnhofen. More info here:

The museum has  bunch of holotypes btw. It really is a lovely little museum. It's also the oldest museum in the Netherlands. And my absolute favourite.

Also, for extra photos, I made a thread about this museum back in 2015.

Yes I also heard that road workers use them as away of storing  their traffic cones.

No problem. If you need any other specific labels translated just say the word.
