Raptor Egg?

Hello!

My son received this as a gift from his grandfather years ago, and we were told this is a raptor egg. However thats all we were told... And my son and I are wondering if it is in fact a raptor egg and would love to know as much as possible about it.

I took a lot of photographs and even through a macro lens. There are lines all over it which I thought were embryo veins...but now I think they might be cracks in what used to be a shell? under the macro lens you can see what I think might be calcite formations in the cracks and possibly crystalized throughout the inside as one of the nodules looks like glassy calcite up close.

I would love to get your opinion on this piece, age, quality, type, etc. This is a prize piece in my sons collection and we would really appreciate any information from the experts :) Thank you!!

This is not a dinosaur egg but a rock concretion or geode. It lacks the shape and eggshell texture of a dino egg.

But this doesn't diminish the fact it's a gift of love from your son's grandfather. I too have a geode given to me by my niece as a dinosaur egg, and it still holds a place of honor in my cabinet.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

Thank you Andy for taking a look. And that information. Do you know if this was a geode, if some are older than others and how to date them?

I'm thinking septarian concretion or nodule. They are sometimes listed for sale as "Dragon Eggs".

Accomplishing the impossible means only that the boss will add it to your regular duties.

It may be, but I suspect it could be just differential weathering of crack fill in a rock fragment.

Welcome to the forum.  Let me add that I wish everyone provided photos like yours.  It gives us a very good picture of your specimen.  Sorry it was not what you had hoped for but still a cool alien looking rock a real keeper for your son.

@ynot  anything to add?

Welcome to TFF!

I agree with @Rockwood, it is a sandstone type rock with mineral filled cracks and differential weathering.

Does not look like septarian nodule to Me.
