Well I decided to take some time off of painting the house and drove 45 miles to an auction. This auction goes on about 5 times a year and has Native American artifacts, military items, old fishing gear and yes, fossils.

The majority of the fossils are fake Moroccan, but sometimes they have other things- today they have a large slab of trackways from the Coconino Sandstone that I am interested in, but it is so far down the list, I do not think I can wait.

Here are some pics of The offerings- most of the flats will sell for about $50.00.

Trackway Slab- standard pen for size reference. The could have cut this slab down a lot since the trackway is in a narrow region of the slab.

This fake Starfish plate just sold for $75.00.

The trackway is very nice, good luck with that, but I am horrified with the amount of awful fakes.

I agree- it amazes me how much people pay for things, a meg tooth about 3 1/2” on the slant with no serrations just sold for $200.00. The auctioneer told the people that with the new “Meg” movie coming out, it was worth about $1000 and that these sharks grew to 160 feet long- lol.

This box just sold for $50.00, there was only 1 person who bid and I cannot understood why people don’t wait until they lower the bid- the auctioneer started it at $500 and then dropped it to $100 and then $50, the person that bid at that time could have probably got it for $10 if he just waited since no one was interested.

It contained a poor partial Green River fish, a couple polished Orthoceras and a couple small pieces of Madagascar petrified wood- the rest was fake.

Interesting at least you wound up with a nice teackway.  My guess is the person buying the meg tooth was an impulse purchase just because of the movie and not a collector.  That Moroccan material looks like purchases from the Tucson show.  You should have brought a red flag with you and waved it at the appropriate auction.:D

That Moroccan stuff is everywhere, including Spain and Morocco.

I don't think Ralph has purchased his trackway yet.

Perhaps the TFF t-shirts should be red so that we can take them off and wave them when appropriate.

Correct Frank, I talked to him about the tooth and he bought it for his son.

Oh god some of them fakes are nasty I can't even imagine how soul destroying it must be for someone to buy something like that and later on realize it's not real :(

Correct Adam, I don’t think I can stay - there are 120 lots ahead of it and that will take about 3 hours- I did buy a big slab at MAPS in April I think for $20.00, but I do love trackways.

The same person just paid $50.00 for this flat- the started the bidding at $200.00 and then dropped it to $50 and he jumped in as the only bidder.

Junk, even the couple of real Flexis aren't very good.

And why not wait until the bid is a tenner before going back up to 50 in auction if necessary?

Can't understand.

Perhaps he knows they're fake but thinks he can sell them individually and make a profit.

Which one could.

Woah .... they just paid 160$ too much for that thing. Gotta hand it to the auctioneer he knows how to sell it though !

Good idea but our arms would fall off by the end of the auction from overuse

I got bored and just bought these 3 boxes of echinoids and brachiopods for $50.00, there must be over 600 pieces- anyone have an  idea of possible location?

Good point.

Well made.

Perhaps someone should patent a flag waving machine.

Also Moroccan stuff, I think, not sure of the exact location, but I've seen stuff like it for sale and there's Arabic writing on the box.

I saw the writing- also, the last thing I needed was more fossils, I hate when I get bored.

Well I took off, but did get the Permian trackways for $30.00, there some others on the reverse side, I also picked up a 45 year old Mantle clock for $10.00. I should not have bid on the Echinoids, but that is what happens when I get bored.

Bargain trackway and a good size too. Good work.

Thanks Bobby, I might try to split it and see what is in the middle.
