Sadly, there is absolutely no way I can take a picture of a drawing on black paper without parts of it washing out from light or being suffused with noise in shadow. I've included a closeup of the detail to indicate what is really going on, colour-wise.

Thanks to @Scylla and @Fossildude19 for the suggestion to take on the gold bugs. :)

My new favorite! You really captured the look of it.

Materials: Pencil (H, HB, 6B), standard white paper.

Time: Likely longer than it would have taken to prep a real one with a dull pen knife. :default_faint:

I'm going to take a breather before tackling the Walliserops. This one took a lot out of me.

Amazing art Kane.  What do you use as models, your own pieces?

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

Thank you. It's a mix from a variety of sources: my own specimens, other people's, or images I encounter. Some I composite from multiple sources.

Isotelus.

Materials: Pencils (H, HB, a lot of 6B), standard white paper.

Time: 7 hours

A simple body plan, but a lot of the time was spent layering, burnishing, re-layering.

Here's hoping that by this time next week those of us going to Bowmanville will find real ones of these. :fingerscrossed:

  • 2 weeks later...

I’ve made several attempts to draw a Walliserops, but none have come close to my standards and expectations. The problem is getting the detail right, which is challenging when the body has to be small enough to accommodate the long fork. Unless I can work on an enormous canvass, or acquire pencils that have tips at the micron level, a lot of the spiny detail is lost and tends to blur together. So, it’s back to some quick study sketches until I can get this one right.

Your drawing are really stunning Kane almost like the photorealist works. Have you thought about going large scale?

Thanks, Bobby! I just might try a bigger work I can hang in the house. That recent one of the Isotelus is my second favourite... My favourite is always the one I’ll do next. :D

This weekend is a dreary, rainy one, so I decided to draw @Ludwigia's Forum famous Kermit. I hope it is faithful to its original!

Time: 12 hours

Materials: Pencils (H, HB), blending stump.

The first task was to get the proportions from the photo just right so that I could pencil it onto the paper. For that, I used a camera lucida to plot the points, contours, and shaded areas. From there, it was a matter of filling in all the detail, including each crack, dimple, growth lines, and even the abraded matrix in Kermit's "mouth." As I went along, I used the blending stump to mask/remove unsightly pencil strokes and give it a more smooth appearance.

And you thank Kermit for being such a delightful subject, and for sitting so impeccably still so that I could do his portrait. :D

Thanks, Tim. :) Of course, now I'm thinking what a challenge it would be to draw using a backhoe (although I can think of one famous earthworks artist whose practice involved creating spiral jetties...Robert Smithson).

The newest. This was was a challenge, not least of which being that I'm getting through a head cold at the moment. Each of the little pustules are there for the most part.
