BuddingPaleo
I've been trying to match this guy up, closest I've come up with is Dosinia Elegans, but the hinge doesn't seem quite right and it just feels like that's not it. I tried to get a shot that showed how wavy it is, like someone pinched it. I'm curious too, why is it so shiny silver? Does erosion cause that? (Sw Fl) Thanks in advance for any help! sixgill pete
What are the age of the sediments this was found in? I do notthink it is Dosinia or any other member of the Veneridae family. The surface structue of the shell reminds me of Anomia, possibly Anomia simplex. BuddingPaleo
Well, most of the stuff I find is from Plio Pleistocene. I'm right towards the bottom edge of the Tamiami formation. I've been looking through the collections at Fl. MoNH, there's so much to sift through that it gets confusing. Thanks for the info, I'll look that up! sixgill pete
If it is Pleistocene I think Anomia simplex is the correct I.D. BuddingPaleo
Early to late pliocene. It fits the bill.
Bronzviking
I agree with jingle because of it's shape and I detect some gloss to the shell. Distinguishing Characteristics Bivalve (2 shells); shell round shaped, slightly inflated, glossy, translucent, thin but sturdy, lower shell is usually flat, upper shell concave; color pale yellow to pale orange, older shells sometime turn black; surface irregular, undulating; lower valve with hole near beak through which byssal threads extend to attach to objects; upper shell has large muscle scar opposite hole and 2 smaller byssal scars beneath it

Lol Thing'll blind you. Like it was cast in silver. I'm super excited to get all the gunk off. Thanks for the info!
