Forum Trip To GMR

sixgill pete

Recommended Posts

This Sunday, August 5th I am planning a forum trip to GMR in Greenville North Carolina. Any and all members are welcome. Of course, with all the recent rain, this is weather contingent. Hopefully the rain will be minimal the next few days as forecast. If so the water should be at a collectible level by Sunday. This is being done in honor of esteemed member digit(Ken) who is currently visiting our amazingly lovely state. As of right now, the plan is to meet at 9 am. Most likely at Greensprings Park on 5th Street.

If you are interested in going, please add to this thread so I can make sure I contact everyone Saturday with final plans.

OK the water is on the high side. But, is doable. Let's hope it does not rain tonight.

Meet at 9 am please be on time. Greensprings park on 5th street. Then you can follow me to our destination a few blocks away.

Equipment wise you need a screen that floats. A rope to attach to your screen and something to anchor and tie your screen off to. Otherwise it will float away as there is still a decent current flow. A long handle shovel. Stuff to put your finds in, drinks and so on. I will probably wear hip waders. But you can wear old sneakers and shorts. Up to you.

Definitely high and it rained last night here. Unfortunately the stream is a bit high and turbid but still huntable.

Thanks for a great time everyone. Sorry we had to bail early without a goodbye, short attention span for the kiddo and when he was done he was done, no going back.

Thanks to all who showed up and to sigxill for organizing this meet-up. Tammy and I were delighted in meeting you all. After a week of rain every day down in Carolina Beach, we were happy to have some sun for a change. Unfortunately, that came with 90+ degree temps and several million percent humidity. I'm pretty sure I lost at least have my body mass in sweat today--but it was well worth it. Always glad to see some esteemed TFF members in person without the need for keyboards. Great fun to dig in a creek just like poking around in South Florida only with Cretaceous exposures--what a treat!

I'm glad I got to see some of those great finds today as they turned up. When I made it back home at the end of this 17 day roadtrip I'll be cobbling together a long and rambling (as is my style) trip report and I hope you'll all contribute whatever photos you took while there (and of the finds).

Thanks again for making this a memorable day and a highlight of our travels through the Carolinas.

Cheers.

Nice meeting you yesterday Ken, thanks a lot for the micro matrix. Do you want me to send my pictures of what I got to you?

It was a real treat to see so many TFF members out on this trip to the GMR. The little sample of Cookiecutter Creek micro-matrix was one of the only interesting gifts I could think to bring up from my area in South Florida. Cookiecutter Shark (Isistius) teeth do occur in the Lee Creek Mine material in Aurora, NC but are apparently quite rare there. It turns out that our unassuming little creek in South Florida where this micro-matrix was collected from happens to have one of the highest densities currently known for these tiny and fragile little teeth. That being said they are still not as common as the other tiny shark, ray and other fish teeth you'll find while picking through the micro-matrix. There should be a few teeth (whole and/or broken) in the amount of micro-matrix you have to look through. If you are not familiar with these tiny gems or how to go about picking though the micro-matrix to find them, have a look at this post (and the links found within):

http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/82771-novel-taxa-from-cookiecutter-creek/

If you have a camera that can take clear close-up photos of your tiny finds, I'd enjoy seeing what you pull from the sample of micro-matrix. In particular, aside from the "normal" shark teeth and the little triangular Cookiecutter Shark teeth, I'd be most interested if you find anything unusual in your micro-matrix. Tony @ynot found a single tiny Catshark (Scyliorhinidae) tooth and I came across a couple of Heterodontus lateral (crushing) teeth in my last collection from this creek. These were shark families not previously recorded from the Florida fossil record and were of interest to the Florida Museum of Natural History (FLMNH). At the start of our roadtrip up to the Carolinas, Tammy and I made a stop to see Dr. Richard Hulbert at the museum and donate Tony's find and several items that I've found including the Heterodontus teeth for their collection. You can see what those odd little teeth look like in the link above. Keep your eye out for anything that looks like those odd teeth. If you find anything similar, it would be very interesting to see those.

Cheers.

-Ken
