palochris68
Hello ! This is my second fossil, bought on an small exhibition in France, it's a Tooth of Spino (according the seller). 3,5 inches. I have studied a lot of the old threads on the forum about Spino Tooth, but it's very difficult for me to recognizing a real, a fake, a restored... I paid this piece 138 dollars. What do you think? Especially if there is a lot of restauration ? Is this a nice and authentic piece (for this price of course) ?

Troodon
I would like to see a photo of the opposite side similar your first photo and one of the tip. That side looks just fine but want to look at the tip
Haravex
I'm seeing some restoration near the tip personally, would be nice to get some pictures without the light glare.
Pemphix
Probably composite. Tip looks glued and somewhat the gap looks filled with sandy matrix. Need better pics...

Pemphix
IMO the tip has been added from another tooth or the tip is the original one of this tooth, but missing a piece which was filled with sandy matrix (i tend more to this second option). You can see that pretty good by the change of the colour and the not fitting outer angle of the tooth (you can see a fine kink/buckle which is definitely not usual for spino teeth..). palochris68
I try to recognize restauration near the tip, it's in the red cercle?
Pemphix
Exact. The one nearer to the root is just glued and done good - so far ok. The one closer to the tip is glued too, but missing some matrix which was filled in. Since this was not done very accurat, the outer angle is not perfect any more and you can the the lighter filling sandy matrix. Nevertheless a nice piece (in case the glued pieces are from the same tooth..) ! P.S. there's another glue-place near the very top of the tip (the last one centimeter).. palochris68
OK ! I begin to understand ! I see too the last glue-place !! So, ok it's a partially restored tooth, but do you think that is the good price for a tooth like this? Too expensive considering the restoration? Troodon
Thank you for the additional photos Your tooth is very nice it has not been restored but repaired with the tip areas reattached as mentioned by Pemphix. The only work done is reattachment and crack fill that is not restoration.
Haravex
Not a composite looks to have 3 repairs done the very tip, middle of the tooth and the crack fill just past the tip. In my opinion it also matters the way you look at it I would generally consider gap and crack fill to be restoration, again that is in my book anyway. Thanks Matt
Seguidora-de-Isis
I agree. Actually this tooth is authentic and is not a compound tooth. Like many fossils from the Kem Kem Beds, it has been repaired with glue and sand, but it is still a true tooth, as can be attested by the various lines that run through the tooth co-existing with one another: I believe that it is not enough to give our opinions whether it is true or false, but I think we should also explain what we are seeing and explain the reason for our conclusions, so we can teach new collectors if in the not too distant future they read this post with some similar doubt. Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question!
palochris68
Wow great ! Thanks !!! I agree with you Seguidora, that's why I'm trying to find your opinions and observations on my fossil (with photo and notes) and that will serve me a lot for future acquisitions
