My first trip to Lilliput

Bobby Rico

Recommended Posts

My first go at fossil hunting in this miniature media. I got some fantastic   Micro matrix form Shark tooth Hill off the man himself @caldigger.   The matrix is from the famous fossil localiton at Sierra Nevada foothills outside Bakersfield, California. Full of tiny teeth at some unknown to me surprises. Any ideas of the missing IDs please let me know.

I think #5 is actually your Angel shark.

The first one you have labeled as Angel is a Lemon shark and the rest I'm not sure of.

Well done again, Doren!

I got sent some micro matrix from here and from Rattlesnake Creek, Florida by the equally generous Ralph.

But i haven't had a chance to go through it all yet.

My bet is they are fishy bits, mainly gnashers.

I think the sort of fan shaped ones are some sort of scute, i should know but I have forgotten. :(

Some lovely things, though, Bobby, I too think these micro-bits are fascinating, a whole new world. :)

In the first close up all are Dasyatis spp - Stingray.

In the second close up is not right. it is a Carcharhinus sp.

You do have a Squalus occidentalis (AGASSIZ, 1856) Dog Shark tooth. It is top center in the plastic display but not pictured in the close up pictures.

Agree with lemon.

Next one is a Galeorhinus sp - Tope shark.

The "Cetorhinus (Basking shark)" not sure on the left one, but the right is a fish tooth.

For the numbered pieces...

1 - 4 are eagle or cownose ray mouth plates.

5 is the roots of an angel shark tooth.

6 & 7 look like Carcharhinus  sp.

8 is a Galeorhinus sp - Tope shark.

9  Is a fish tooth.

This is a great site for identifying fauna from several locations....

It is really hard to kick the habit once you start with the micros. I think #1-3 are ray tooth plates. #9 sure is pretty! :dinothumb:

Yeah you’re not wrong I have found some Lower Permian Richard's Spur from Oklahoma on our favourite auction site. Thank you for IDs. The last tooth is stunning

Time to invest in a decent microscope, then, if you don't already have one.
