Nice day at the NSR ammonite parts ID?

Good time at the North Sulphur River in Ladonia, Texas this weekend. Here are some of the things we found! I’m curious about the gray ammonite (bottom right). I’ve attached a few photos at the end (first two photos) to see if any of you know what the black line is running through it at the bottom. It reminds me of the vein in a shrimp!

My best guess is Pachydiscus paulsoni based on the elaborate septa and how common it is. The red pieces of ammonites are also that species.

The black is phoshate which may may or may not be part of the ammonite.

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

I would go with heavily weathered ammonite fragment, and the "black line" might be the siphuncle if it's on other level than the keel. Wait for other opinions, I'm not an ammonite specialist. :)

I do not know what it is about it, but I really, really like that one pristine condition Squalicorax tooth. Excellent finds.

Thank you! Yes, I was very excited to find that! I rarely find anything complete down in the NSR

I agree with Pachydiscus for the genus of the brownish one, but I am not sure if it is a paulsoni. I have never seen any Pachydiscus except paulsoni out there though. That one just looks a little different to me. I think it has to be paulsoni since I personally have never heard of anyone finding any other Pachydiscus out there. Literature does report 4 species though. The red fragment is definitely Pachydiscus paulsoni. There is nothing else out there with that suture pattern.

I need to see the sutures of the  brown one from the flank straight on rather than from the keel. The ones where you can see the flank are to far out and I can’t zoom in to see the sutures clearly.

The black one may be a Menabites or a TexenitesMenabites seem more common to me, but you can look at the suture patterns for yourself. The pic isn’t straight on so I can’t see the sutures well.

I may not be saying this exactly right, but the spacing between major lobes are wider in the Texanites and the auxiliary lobes don’t run as deep as those of the Menabites.

These are species lists for the NSR. One is what is reported in the literature and the other is a list of what was presented at the NSR symposium many years ago now.

Definitely the siphuncle. They always seem to be black when I find them too. They run directly under the ventral keel but can sometimes be seen farther into the fossil if they are part of the previous whorl when the form is involute enough for considerable overlap.

I was starting to wonder if anyone was going to post NSR finds lol. You had a good day. I really like the shark teeth and Enchodus teeth. I'm surprised you didn't see any artifacts while picking up all of those little teeth.

You had  probably already snagged them all, Jarrod.  :P;)

Nice finds, shel67 !

Thanks for posting them. :)

Thanks, Jarrod! I have one piece that is questionable. Not sure if it’s an artifact or not. I’ll get it cleaned up and post it to see what you think. :)

Thank you Bob, for the confirmation. I appreciate.

Oh, this is the suture pattern for Pachydiscus paulsoni. I tried posting it last night, but it wouldn’t let me upload it.

The other Pachydiscus look a little different.

@JarrodB This is the only piece I found in the NSR that even slightly looked like an artifact. Only because if it’s edges. Just a rock? :trilosurprise:

I think that one is natural. I can pm you a good spot on NSR to find artifacts along with other fossils if you like.
