Picked up a few things on a hot muggy walk,  I mean climb, yesterday.

North Simi Valley, most likely Quaternary.

New site features make this all so easy!  Good job guys!

Is that a cetacean vertebra? Is it fossilized?

It looks like the area has every epoch of the Neogene and Paleogene present as well as Pleistocene and upper Cretaceous. Interesting mix all near each other.

Yes, fossilized.  Cuesta sea cow.  as per Boesse.

Hard to tell sometimes if land or sea.  Many sand layers from many time periods.  We find mastodon near whale.  Shallow seas, shore line and deep sea trenches.

Of course that is the top of the mountain now.  Much fun!

Thanks for the reply.

@cowgirlfossils is right - this is Hydrodamalis cuestae, the giant extinct sea cow. Bear in mind that 'dugong' has two meanings: informally referring to dugongid sea cows and the extant genus Dugong. There are several extinct dugongids from California, including H. gigas, Dioplotherium allisoni, Dusisiren dewana, and Dusisiren jordani.

Are You talking about the rib fragments or the vert?
