vincecarder
Hello everyone, I'm a collector of all sorts of things, I use to love hunting for shells and fossils near the ocean as a kid. I was going through my old collection and I found this interesting rock that I hope someone can help me ID. The specimen was found on a beach on an Island in Greece over 20+ years ago. It's got some naturally occurring shapes and letters, almost like an abstract painting on the one side and a signature on the other side. Nothing has been done to it, as found. My guesses......ancient ball of clay with some sort of plant life in it? Septarian Nodule? A little stumped so hoping someone can help out. KimTexan
Welcome to the Fossil Forum from Texas. I can tell you it is not a septarian nodule. I collect them. Generally the crystalline material is calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite and/or calcite. The light band does not look like aragonite or calcite. It looks like a micro-cryptocrystalline material, which could be one of several forms of chalcedony. I kind of think it looks like agate with inclusions, but it could be another form of chalcedony. I am not a pro at this so wait for others to comment. The unique thing is the organic like curved lines of the secondary material. Its a cool looking rock though. I’d probably picked it up too.
