Stunning sutures

Max-fossils

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Here is one of the Aconoceras nisus ammonites I found in Carniol, prepped. Now unfortunately the center is gone :(

Luckily... it has some incredible sutures! They are very nicely visible, and give the ammonite a really cool look IMO

The real reason for the sutures to be so clear is actually because there is still a bit of clay in between the suture lines. So to be perfectly honest, that means that the prep isn't 100% complete. But I'm purposefully gonna leave it as it is, because this way the wonderful really stand out.

Pyrite ammonite

Aconoceras nisus

Carniol, France

"Gargasian",

Aptian, Cretaceous (120 my)

Found 22/7/2018

Now, I'm really curious to see great sutures on some cephalopods in your collection!

Show off your best specimens here! :ammonite01:

(And, of course, don't forget to include some info about them ;))

Wow Max, the sutures there are very nice. I unfortunately don't have many opportunities to buy or hunt for ammonites where I am but I just enjoy looking at this one.

Thanks!

That's a shame... Is there not even one fossil shop in Maryland that sells ammonites?

Beautiful ammonite Max

I think that structure is called the Septal Margins.

Harpoceras Falciferum from Liminster Somerset UK  . This maybe the best example of this ammonite from that location that you can find.  I hope this makes up for me letting you down on the Rhino yesterday.

There may be.. if there is I have yet to see it. Ordering online is not a good way in my opinion because you can't see if it's fake or not.

There is often nice ammonites included in the auctions to benefit the Forum, keep your eyes peeled.

The crux of the matter is that I never have anything that interests anyone who wants to trade.

Ok Max. Here are a couple from the middle Jurassic at the clay pit in Geisingen, Germany. First a Graphoceras concavum from the concavum zone and then a Brasilia bradfordensis from the bradfordensis zone.

Thanks guys. I can still add a few more. First a Brasilia geisingensis from the same site as above.

A1097a.2.thumb.jpg.5342b5c1ee26cead6ca512053cb64be1.jpg

And then a selection from the early Kimmeridgian Lochen Formation in the upper Danube valley. Taramelliceras (Hoploceras) nodosiusculum, Streblites tenuilobatus, Garnierisphinctes sp. and Crussoliceras crusoliense. One can observe on the second and last ones on hand of the sutures where the phragomocone ends and the living chamber begins.

I haven't got around to photographing most of my ammos yet, so here's the best i can do for now:

This little one's from Madagascar. Can't remember the name at the mo.

And this is Polyplectus discoides from Portugal.

I like that you can see both the ribbing and the sutures.

@Tidgy's Dad very nice! I was expecting to see a Madagascaran ammonite on this thread. But I wasn't expecting that Portuguese beauty!
