Keichousaurus - real or fake? Advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

Is this legit? It looks epic... maybe too epic to be real?! Any advice would be much appreciated from a newb fossil enthusiast.

Cheers

Looks real to me too, but do you have any close up photos above the lower left body? It looks a bit painted from the second photo given how consistent the colouring is compared to the rest of the specimen, which is real as far as I can tell.

So in my view, mostly real, but question marks around the lower left body, it seems painted at first glance.

Quick response time guys! Thanks loads.

Here’s a closer look. Is it unusual to have some parts painted?

It's not abnormal to have some parts painted if said parts were damaged during the fossil preparation process, but it's ultimately up to you if you want to purchase a piece that isn't "complete" in that sense.

From that photo, the lower left definitely does look a bit painted, I don't see any 3D raise on it. If it were me, I'd pass this one and wait for a more complete piece, these fossils actually aren't as uncommon as you may think.

If you're planning to purchase this, completely up to you, but maybe worth looking up the price point for it and comparing it to previous sales to see if it's a good deal.

I agree that it is a genuine specimen of acid-prepped Keichousaurus, with incomplete skeleton and some parts painted.  Not a very good specimen but if it is cheap, it's fine.

No apology, we are more than happy to offer advice and learn together on the authenticity of fossils.

I think this is a better specimen than the first one.  This one is also an acid washed/mechanically prepped specimen but it has more details and the skeleton is more complete.  But one thing you need to consider is that the slab is broken and glued together, at the tip of the snout and possibly the tail too.

Of course, if you decide to purchase this one, other than that the seller is willing to ship to NZ, you should make sure that there is a money back guarantee.  Some Chinese dealers would ask you to transfer money via WeChat or bank transfer, avoid doing that as there is no guarantee.

Agree with what Crazyhen said, it's definitely a better specimen and looks genuine, but the only problem are the cracks in the slab especially around the head. Again, personally I would wait unless this one is at a good price.

Also, to his point about payment, Paypal is the best choice since there is a dispute function :)
