Calcite ammonite prep

I found this lovely calcite ammonite at Saltwick Bay along the Yorkshire coast of the UK a while back. There was no shell remaining from what I can tell, leaving just the calcite formed inside. Not sure if this is common at all?

Very nice. 

But that is the outer part of the ammonite. Those are the external ribs you can see.

The original shell has been replaced by minerals during fossilization.

Alex is right. Most of the "shell" is still there, although of course in the form of replacement calcite instead of the original aragonite. Like he says, it's quite common, but always good to find one with the shell still on instead of just a mold. Between 12 and 2 o'clock you can see the calcite mold inside.
