Show Us Your Green River Fossils!

Hey everyone! I recently started planning a trip out west for next summer and was thinking of going to the Green River formation. One of those "keep all you find" digs. Thought it would be cool to see some fossils from there that some of you may have found. Or even some you could have purchased. Thanks!

Here are all my Green River fossils:

May you find a stingray or a gar.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

I thought that I would post what I have, I don't think that I have any more, but I could be wrong.

Well, I’m headed out there next week.  American Fossil Quarry for sure, possibly Warfield the next day.  If I find anything good I will post it.

@Sagebrush Steve  my wife and I spent all day at American Quarry yesterday. It was amazing. No really spectacular finds, but we found at least 100 fish — most of them complete. Super fun. Word of caution - the road to the quarries are the pits. Bring boxes and padding or you’ll bring home a bunch of fragments.

Will do.  It has been about 10 years since I have been there, but I have 4WD so I should be okay.  I have plenty of moving blankets to wrap everything up.  As I recall you are supposed to store the slabs vertically to reduce the risk.  Weather should be okay but they are forecasting it to be windy.  Hope that won’t be too much of a problem.

This is my favorite Green River piece. I love it since it's a busy little section of fossil lake bottom. A swarm of nice quality  Plecia, a bunch of fish coprolites, an Ailanthus seed (this tree should be known to many in the Northeastern US as the familiar 'Ghetto Palm' of abandoned lots and railroads, the modern tree's seeds are identical) and even a Knightia in the layer just underneath.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was at the American Fossil Quarry on 9/11 and 9/12. Collecting was great and I found many fish.  Here are a couple of photos: Diplomystus (4.5 inches) on bottom and "baby" Phareodus (2 inches) above; followed by magnification photos of their respective teeth (even though it's quite small, the Phareodus sharp teeth show clearly). I was told that a "baby" Phareodus was an unusual find.
