Insane Brachiopod

JurassicParkCarnotaurus

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I recently saw this very cool, but also very expensive fossil brachiopod. And well it may be a little out of my price range I would still like to know if it is legit. The seller states it is an undescribed brachiopod that has affinities to the genius Echinaurus. It is from a layer several meters above the Drotops couche at Mrakib, Morocco. This area is Middle Devonian. The seller states that it is about 3.33 inches wide and that the white mineral on the brachiopod itself is natural, not glue or anything like that.

Can you ask the seller to provide a few pictures :P.

Wow, that looks like it's incredibly fragile. Must have been a nightmare to prep even by acid means.

Especially since the seller says that is was prepped under microscope using airscribes and air abrasives.:faint: Would have taken me years to prep that way...and I probably would have broken it a bunch too.

Ah, but does it come with a "Certificate of Authenticity"?

Its not the authenticity I have in question. Its the fear that it would survive prepping, survive the shipping process ( really scary!) and get to my door only to have all the spines spontaneously drop off as soon as I gently place it in a case.

Too fragile for these "Rhino" hands to handle.

Since you take the time to lift the figures and post them, why not include an equally important citation?  It only takes a brief extra moment to copy / paste any citation from Google Scholar.  Besides potential violations of "Fair Use" policy, it really should be a simple courtesy to the author and all those who will see this post going forward.  You post a lot of excellent info at TFF, so I am at a complete loss to understand your aversion to include the basic info that would redound to the benefit of all.

These are real.

I have a friend that has visited with the preparator.

I think I recall him saying that it takes between 40 and 60 hours to prepare one.

That is the reason for the high price.

Incredible, I've seen a few of these and they are all beautiful pieces but I didn't know that it takes this long.

Do you know the method they use to prep them?

Nice to see brachiopods treated more tenderly than some Trilos or Keichs :dinothumb:.

As mentioned, prepped using microscope with airscribes and air abrasives. I suspect spines were removed and reattached at the end. Just like "trilo-prep"...
