My latest additions to the collection.

A plesiosaur tooth (Polycotylus sopzkoi) found in the Seversk sandstone, Stary-Oskol, Belgorod, Kursk in Russia (Cretaceous, Albian, ±100 mya).
This tooth was a gifted to me by my girlfriend, so I am very happy with it! :)

And I recieved a plate with an Ichthyosaur rostrum and associated tooth found in the Solnhofen Limestone in Germany (Jurassic, Tithonian, 150 mya).
I think it is safe to say that it probably belongs to Aegirosaurus leptospondylus as it is by my knowledge the only Ichthyosaur present in Solnhofen, other genusses are wastebucket taxons or nomen dubium and probably all the same species.
I bought this piece for a good price on our favourite auction site from someone who I believe usually doesn't sell fossils, but I immediatly recognized the tooth as being that of an Ichthyosaur, so I knew I had to get it. But unfortunately I don't have any further information on where it was found exactly, only that it comes from the Solnhofen Limestone.
But I am very happy I aqcuired the piece as Ichthyosaur material seems to be quite rare from Solnhofen.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've expanded my fossil room once more! :D

I finally removed the tank of my late bichir and I added some new display cubes and a small filing cabinet.
I moved some fossil displays around to make this into a mesozoïc display with my Dinosaur claws, my Wealden Fossils, Morrison Formation fossils, Hell Creek Display, Solnhofen display and Triassic fossils.
I do intent to use this new corner to expand my dinosaur fossil collection in the coming years, although I do intent to focus more on my current project which is the Proboscidean dipslay I intent to make.

But here are the pictures of the new side of the room.

1596712885386761.jpg.f35b8ac293a5dc3f67b0529c97aa550c.jpg

I do intent to display the Diplodocus bone in an erect position, but first I need to find or make some kind of stand for it.

5f2beed6a183b_1596712885386761(1).jpg.98ab2b490c8231b0b2621927dd18d797.jpg

And here is the start of the Solnhofen display, I was planning on expanding on this collection at the end of the year by visiting some fossil fairs which usually have a lot of nice Solnhofen stuff, but since COVID-19 is still at large that will have to wait another year I suppose.

But for anyone who is wandering, I wanted to add some crustacean & fish fossils, a floating crinoïd and perhaps a Mesolimulus & Ginkgo fossil.

5f2beed919ee3_1596712885386761(2).jpg.1d91d1c9d023dda20bc734f9b1c2d4e5.jpg

I do have a big empty space now where the claws used to be, but knowing myself, I guess that won't be for long ;)

At least one of the middle shelves is already reserved for the start of the Proboscidean dipslay, but I might even need 2 of those and a part of the top shelf if I can manage to expand that collection. Currently I am waiting on my first 2 specimens: a Prodeinotherium molar (and a Deinotherium model from Eofauna) and a partial Columbian Mammoth molar.

5f2beeda2c08b_1596712885386761(3).jpg.5295857c8c03544a5a56d11db49fa06d.jpg

And with the relocation of my Triassic fossils, I decided to move my Maastrictian type locality fossils (many of which are self collected) to one of the shelves and I am quite pleased with the result.

5f2beedb575b9_1596712885386761(4).jpg.251ca87af4b50ff3464705372a395be1.jpg5f2beedc82c53_1596712885386761(5).jpg.bf453a1e5b0e2d16b28c69fed4e84cfa.jpg

And with all the moving I have been doing, I also rearranged my Mesozoïc display in my showcase (again...)

And I think I finally gave my Lebanese shark a final resting place :)

5f2beeddad6a9_1596712885386761(6).jpg.4e55f57c6661120306ae15c9dc8d6141.jpg

And a couple of weeks ago I also recieved this nice Precolumbian artefact, I wanted to post it here earlier but I wasn't really in a good mood the past few weeks.

But the artefact is really cool, it's a Precolombian Cylinder Seal with Crocodile Motive by the Manteño Civilization found in Isla Puna in Ecuador. The bead from between 500 - 1500 AD and it came from an old German collection.
I am really happy with this piece as for as long as I can remember I have been interested with the ancient South & Central American civilizations like the Atzecs, Mayans, Inca's, Toltecs, Olmecs, and so one...
So I have always wanted to have a little artefact that belonged to one of those ancient South American civilizations and I am really glad that I finally got a little peice of it :)

Today the first specimens for my new Proboscidean display arrived. It was a very pleasant surprise as I didn't expect them till halfway next week.

The first specimen is a partial molar that belonged to a Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) found in Dixie County, Florida, USA (Pleistocene, 20 000 years old)

159678891954877787.jpg.8b1ab881f378b55fe2d300bd232d27aa.jpg

The second specimen is worn but rooted molar that belonged to Prodeinotherium bavaricum found in the Bugojno Basin, Gornji Vakuf, Bosnia-Herzegovina (Miocene, 11 mya).

And here they are in their new display, it's still kinda empty but I do intent on adding some new specimens to the dipslay in the coming months.

And I also still expect the Deinotherium model made by Eofauna to arrive in the coming weeks. :)

Thank you!
I do indeed try my best to display my fossils in such a way that it gives museum vibes.
It's just feel lovely to be in the room and to feel like you sit in a miniature museum :)

Some new additions from the past month.

A nice canine tooth found in the fissure fills of the Brooksville 2 site, Hernando County, Florida, USA. (Arikareean, Oligocene, 28 mya)

The tooth is a little over 1 cm, which is quite large for this location as most finds are usually only a few mm in length.
Unfortunatly I don't know to which animal this tooth belonged. The listing said that it could belong to a canid or a mustelid, and since a lot a bat fossils are known from the location I suppose it could also belong to a larger species of bat.

Isselicrinus buchii found in Eben Emael, Belgium. (Maastrichtian, Cretaceous, 68 mya)

I had normally a hunt planned last weekend to Eben-Emael, but unfortunalty due to COVID-19 it had to be cancelled.
But to ease the pain of missing out on this hunt which I was looking very forward to, I decided to buy this fossil. Also turns out these crinoïds are incredibly rare from this location :)

And I also recieved this nice Deinotherium modal made by Eofauna.

I purchased it to display next to my Prodeinotherium molar in my Proboscidean display.

I just recieved this beauty!

It's a partial jaw with M2 molar from a Straight-tusked elephant (Palaeoloxodon antiquus) on a custom-made stand.

The fossil was found in the Rhine River gravel deposits in Germany. (Pleistocene, 120 000 - 100 000 years old).

I've been wanting this one for a long time, and was pondering over buying it recently, especially now I have started a Proboscidean collection.
But since our local fossil fair Paleotime is cancelled due to COVID-19, I decided to spent to money I normally spent there, on this amazing jaw.

I also recieved this book as a gift from the seller, it's about Ice Age fossils from the North Sea & Maasvlakte.

5f58c919170d0_15996534021640200(6).jpg.d418fbc0a165818109ab6f31a2649653.jpg

I shall post pictures of how I display the jaw in the coming day, when my Palaeoloxodon model by Eofauna arrives.

The Eofauna model of Palaeoloxodon arrived today as well!

159975551488946954.jpg.ab428abbc56f39a47aae4e7d28d3266e.jpg

So this where I decided to display the Palaeoloxodon antiquus jaw.

I knew it wouldn't fit in one of the shelves of my display cubes and due to the sloping wall I couldn't place on top of them either.

But I still wanted the piece to be close to my Pleistocene fossils and to my other Proboscidean pieces.

So I planned to place it in the corner on the new archive cabinet, I only wasn't sure wether it would look nice or even fit, but luckily it does! :D

Quite happy with the look of it, although I might raise the stand of it a little bit.

And to those who were wondering, it is quite a large piece.

FYI I'm pretty sure that this is a Isurus Hastalis lower tooth not a retroflexus, they are super rare. Been digging for 5 years still waiting to find one!

Thank you for providing me with the correct ID, as I wasn't entirely convinced by the ID provided by the seller.
Thank you for the help!

Thank you very much! The models do indeed add a lot to the overall look of the room. :)

The last few days where almost entirely about fossils here :)

I've been on 2 seperate fossil hunts during the last 5 days. We visited two Devonian quarries in the Belgian Ardennes.

The first hunt was a closed stone quarry in Resteigne in Belgium. The rock layers there are part of the Jemelle formation and are Eifelian in age.

The second hunt was with the fossil club to the "La Couvinoise" quarry in Couvin, Belgium. The rocks layers there are part of the Hanonet Formation which are Givetian in age

Ofcourse I managed to bring home quite a bit of stuff.

We mainly found Crinoïd stems, Brachiopods, corals, Bryozoans and the odd Trilobite and Stromatoporoid as well as some very rare dripping stones from an ancient collapsed cave system.

A more detailed accound of the finds we did there will be posted in the fossilhunt topics just above. But I just wanted to share some of the more noteworthy finds here.

A piece of Trilobite Pygidium found in Couvin. The only one I managed the bring home from this location and one of the few found during the club's field trip.

While trilobites are uncommon but not unheard off from this location our filed trip leader was quite surprised when I showed him, as according to him it was the first time that a trilo was found in that specific layer. I found it during the last 30 minutes of our stay in the quarry, but it might need some further prep to reveal more of the Pygidium.

And then here are some of the lastest items I recieved in the mail, most of it is micromatrix so I have something to spent the time in the coming month :)

A small weevil (Otiorhynchus perditus) found in the Parachute Creek Member, Green River Formation, Rio Blanco County, Colorado, USA. Eocene age, 50 mya.

5f68c9c4b5dca_160069880031401348(3).jpg.26fe609571af817502fc989e2d76ec68.jpg

A bag of Triassic Bull Canyon micromatrix (Bull Canyon, San Miguel County, New Mexico, USA / Norian age) which can contain material from archosaurs, reptiles, fish, labyrintodonts and early dinosaurs.

A bag of Oligocene Brooksville 2 fissure fill micromatrix (Brooksville 2 site, Hernando County, Florida, USA / Arikarean age), which can contain echinoid fragments, ostracods, foraminifera and bone and teeth fragments from rodents, bats, lizards, snakes & frogs.

A bag of Permian Richards Spur fissure fill micromatrix (Richards Spur, Oklahoma, USA / Sakmarian age) which mainly contains Captorhinus material but other reptiles, pelycosaurs and amphibians can be present.

After only 5 minutes of searching I already found a piece of Captorhinus aguti jaw and some bones which probably also belong to Captorhinus.

And while I don't usually post non fossil-related content in this topic, I just absolutely wanted to share this amazing book I recieved a couple of days ago, as it is too amazing not to share!

It is the book "All the birds of the world" by Lynx Edicions which is a monster of a book. It has almost a 1 000 pages and is by far my largest single volume.

This book is the first ever book that has all 11 524 described birds species (that are excepted by any of the four major world lists) illustrated in a single volume.

The book illustrates every species, as well as sexual dimorphism, morphs and distinctive subspecies and each species has a distribution map.

Another thing I personally find very cool is the fact that in the appendices of the book they have a section that lists every bird species that went extinct since the year 1500, including the dodo.

I just can't describe how much I love this book, I already look forward to recieve the double volume checklist of the Mammals of the World which should arrive next month :D

Somewhere in the next 2 - 3 weeks I should also recieve 2 other books, this time about paleontology.
One is a book on the fossils found in the Triassic Winterswijk quarry in the Netherlands and the other is Dinosaur Facts and Figures: The Sauropods and Other Sauropodomorphs.

I would like to echo what others have said about seeing your collection grow. You have made some very nice and interesting acquisitions, and I really like the way you have embraced casts and models into your collection – it really brings your displays to life and gives it a museum vibe.

Thank you :)

I am really proud of the point that my collections and display currently are at.
I would never of have guessed a few years ago that my collection would become what is it today.

If you had told me 5 years ago that I would own some of the specimens that I have added during the last years, I just wouldn't of have believed you :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Added a few new things to the collection.

A couple of Bolbaster prunella sea-urchins that I found myself last week while searching my usual fossil spot.

And this one just arrived in the mail as well!

A guide to the fossils of Richards Spur, a location that I am very interested in.

This one will come in handy when I try to ID some of the finds from the micromatrix.

21 hours ago, Tidgy's Dad said:

Some great new fossils and the books are all great! :Smiling:

Thank you, I am very happy with the aqcuisitions from the past months and I ordered some other nice ones today and yesterday :)

The books are great too, very happy to have added them to my libary. Especially the Richards Spur one, been wanting that on for years but it isn't in print anymore so it was very hard to find. Glad I managed to secure a copy, will be very helpfull in ID'ing the finds from the matrix :)

A box with some new fossil equipment arrived today!

A shoulderbag & some spare tools to go on fossil hunts, some minor prep materials, soms stands, microfossils slides, ...

And a managed to sneak a few small fossils in the order as well ;)

160277677225893946.jpg.dde3dfe3244b6cc520a831ded530a296.jpg

A small floating Crinoïd (Saccocoma tenella) found in the Solnhofen Limestone, Germany (Jurassic, 150 mya)

A Geesops sparsinodosus found in Vireux, France (Devonian, 390 mya)

This trilobite comes from the famous fossil location in Vireux where it is now prohibited to collect fossils. This location is close to the Belgian border and the fauna is similar to the ones we find here in Resteigne, Couvin & other quarries in the Ardennes that have layers that date back to the Eifelian, but the trilobites in Vireux were more abundant and usually of better quality than the ones found here in Belgium. So I am quite pleased I managed to purchase this one :)

And while not about fossils, I also recieved this amazing book!

It's from Lynx Edicions which also published "All the Birds of the World" which I showed last month.

This is the boxset with the 2 volumes of "The Illustrated Checklist of Mammals of the World" which covers and illustrates all 6 554 described mammal species.
But volumes together are around 1200 pages filled with over 7 150 illustrations of all the living mammals.

Really love this amazing book, it is too cool not to share :D

Here are some of my latest aqcuisitions.

I managed to aqcuire some nice models, some nice microfossil samples, some samples of sediments and a very nice mineral, some new display boxes and stands, as well as some nice fossils :)

A Desmostylus hesperus molar found in the Tembler Formation, Fresno County, California, USA (Miocene, 15 mya)

160474366236806886.jpg.aadab1b32b578391438a0cff1221b2c0.jpg

A Petrified weevil cocoon (Leptopius duponti) found in Elliston in Australia (Holocene)

I've been wanting one of these for a long time :)

5faa88099fc1a_160501007126860569(8).jpg.126c83b9cd481b33172ce57775f4b244.jpg

An Ophidienovum (fossil snake egg) found in Bouxwiller, Bas-Rhin, France (Eocene, 48 - 41 mya)

5faa880585191_160501007126860569(6).jpg.f573c8380d120bdaeb3017dad4d7a9ed.jpg5faa88071e562_160501007126860569(7).jpg.04790675aec599efb4eb293ae8d0cef0.jpg

An unidentified shark tooth which I recieved as an extra from the seller.
Unfortunalty there wasn't any information with it, the preservation kinda resembles the teeth from Dakhla or the teeth from Khouribga's phosphate mines.
I can't reallt place the tooth, if anyone has any guesses, feel free to share.
