A few weeks ago, I visited a quarry in central Iowa more for the purpose of its well known and beautiful crystals, not it's fossils:

I was told that most of the "vugs" were a result of fossil reabsorbtion and calcite deposition in the void. It was hard for me to comprehend until I started splitting open the few brachiopods that I found. They indeed were crystalized in the middle!! Here is one I split open:2018-09-023.thumb.jpg.3d42a5a6d7453c2630b42defb1a3f4f3.jpg

Here is the purpose of my post. The dark item is not anything I recognize. Most of the time "black" turns up in this area, I am told it is fish pieces.  Does anyone have a suggestion of what part of a fish this would be, IF it is fish at all??

Looks like a fish tooth to me.

Maybe something like Onychodus,  that are found in New York.

Nice looking (and very old) tooth!

@Innocentx, I wished I had the opportunity to hunt this area more often. Every trip, I stumble on fish remains, but it is uncommon to find teeth. Maybe three teeth in 12 visits????? Unfortunately the group that I go into the quarry with are interested in the crystals, not the fossils, so information is sketchy at best. I can't even figure what type of Devonian rock exists in this quarry.

@Fossildude19, Thanks for the likely ID.

To those who enjoyed the crystals, my better ones found that day are already in "storage". I should have photographed the best  before retiring them to my barn. If anyone is into crystals and would like some, message me and I can see what I can do.

Hi,

What are your minerals ? Dolomite for the 1st one ? Fluorite + quartz for the 2nd one ?

Here are some whole teeth (part of a whorl) from the Union Springs Bone Bed in New York. They are from a Mid- Devonian Fish Onychodus.

I'd take you up on that but I think the int'l shipping might be problematic..?  They are attractive, though.
