Jkramasz
I found this in south central MN near the Minnesota River. Is this a tabulate coral? Is a more specific identification possible?

Tidgy's Dad
Not a tabulate coral. Nor does it look rugose. This would seem to be a more recent scleractinian coral, not sure which one. 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
caldigger
Recent in Minnesota? In a river? In a Deloren?! * Sorry, just couldn't resist that last part.

This area of Minnesota was covered by the sea during the Devonian period. I don't know how a more recent coral would end up here, but I suppose it is possible. But, I am a novice and still have much to learn.

Not likely in a fresh water enviornment. Especially in river deposits.
FossilDAWG
Well it's definitely a scleractinian coral, and there are no possible geological sources of such corals anywhere in the area or to the north (eliminating transport by glaciers). That leaves transport by humans. In fact it seems to be typical of Pleistocene and recent Florida corals. I'd guess that someone dumped their aquarium in the river. Jkramasz
Don - thank you. This does apoar to look like the images Pleistocene corals. People dump everything in the river, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if this did come from someone's aquarium. Thank you for your help!
Herb
looks recent to me also. Maybe from a fish tank. Doren's DeLorean maybe? Tidgy's Tardis? I have no explanation, but it's a modern style coral. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
caldigger
Ah ya, I forgot about the human idiot factor. "Sure, my exotic South American tropical saltwater fish will do real well in a cold Minnesota stream. Be free my beauties, go swim and have a good life outside of captivity!" Stupid humans! Many years ago my brother thought he was doing my little parakeet a favor by setting it loose. Poor thing might have lasted a whole hour before a hawk made a meal of it. Some people don't put much thought into their actions. Yes you are right, humans probably dropped it there, for whatever reason.
