This is an Oviraptor egg,

Eastern Asia, 60% eggshell coverage. 80 million years old.

It seems authentic to me, but I’m not an expert.  Do you believe that this is authentic (and definitely an Oviraptor egg)? Also is this is a quality specimen? Thanks

This egg looks authentic to me. As far as quality it’s missing about half the shell- the entire underside is bare showing where the shell was but the shell on the top side looks mostly there. There are better quality eggs but price will significantly increase as does quality. A perfect egg of this type can go for $2k-3k and are very rare to come by! Depending on budget and how quickly you want one this could be a good starter Oviraptor egg.

Unless you live in China and can buy dozzens for as little as 30$-100$ per single egg at local fossil-shows. Very rare to come by and hence inflated price&demand only because of export legislation.

There are some nice eggs on that table!

Dino eggs are like the diamond industry- restrict supply to keep prices up.

Take note of the texture and tiny pore openings, also look at the cross-section of the shell, based on these plus overall shape it does appear to be real. If you look closely you can see the two layers of the shell, it is hard to see but actually visible. For your question on it being "definitely an Oviraptor egg" well that is a little complex. Scientifically, this egg belongs to the Elongatoolithidae family, of that you can be fairly certain and based on embryonic discoveries this family is very likely to be the eggs from Oviraptors.  So in simple terms, probably, but the correct way to label any egg is with the ootaxon and not with the dinosaur it may or may not be from.

Agreed on the eggshell present, not going to make any comments on value or price.

@CBchiefski thanks so much for your input. Not regarding price, but about the quality in your opinion, is this something worth looking into, or is it something to be more patient with and pass? I know it’s up to the buyer, but I know litte about dinosaur eggs and I’m not sure how often ones of this quality appear, etc.

This is about average quality for what appears on the market outside of Asia.  Better ones do show up but you need to be patient for them to appear.  Its a personal decision if this is the right egg for you.  You could always buy it and hold on to it and if one of better quality shows up you could always resell this one.

We do but unfortunately these never show up on the market for collectors... Most are tucked away in museums and universities.

Go with what HamptonsDoc said, personally I pay little mind to what is on the market so am not in a position to say. I can give my opinion on if it is real or fake and an ID, but little past that.

These shows in China are supplying fossils to Chinese museums and universities aswell. There are a lot of nice eggs on those tables, imagine this is only a small part of all these chinese shows. You could actually buy by the dozzens... Photos are from Thomas K., btw.
