I had a great day on the North Sulphur River Texas. I kayaked a few miles but found most of my quality items right by the first bridge and surrounded by tracks. The shark verts were in situ coming out of the clay. I only found 3 but I feel more will come out with another rise. I will come back and check the location. The big piece of turtle shell looked like old metal in the water so I'm sure people had been walking over it. The mosasaur tooth is nice but broken on one side. The artifacts were a nice bonus.

I never realized how lucky the tribes out west are (plenty of nice workable obsidian for points) :)

All great finds, though the shark vertebrae really are amazing. The little worn ammonite is also interesting.

Some nice finds there.

Be thankful for the lack of obsidian in Your area, it caused the natives to use those beautiful cherts and agates to make their tools.

Much better than the typical blacks and greys of obsidian.

So jealous! I wanted to go last weekend, but plans fell through. 5+ hour drive from Houston, after all. REALLY want to go this Saturday if the rains will hold off.

Your finds are so awesome!!! Especially the turtle fragment and the little red ammonite!

Thanks. I've concentrated on artifacts lately but now I have fossil fever again. Lol

Just goes to show it pays to pick up everything, even though from the surface it looked like it could have given you Tetanus or Hepatitis. ;)

So when you kayak are you kayaking alone and then hike back to your vehicle?

I have thought about kayaking some areas, but then didn’t want to have to hike back to my car. Most areas the roads don’t run parallel to the river. It isn’t like there is a kayak/canoe company there that will drop you off and then you paddle to a takeout point.

Of course maybe the river is slow enough you can paddle back up stream to your put in point.

Hi Kim. It was slow enough I could have paddled back this time but I went with a friend and his son. We parked one vehicle at a bridge a few miles downstream and put in at the bridge upstream. We rode the kayaks very little due to the water level being low and mainly walked the 3 miles or so just using the kayaks as a sled to hold our gear, food, water and bones. I could have easily made the walk but it would have been rough having to carry that much gear.

Nice finds! Especially the shark verts, would they be cretoxyrhina or ptychodus due to its size or am I wrong?
