Wyoming fish fossil help needed

Well here is an interesting piece I found while I was in Wyoming at Safari Fossils Quarry. I’ve prepped pretty much all I can by hand with out damaging this piece.

But im at a loss for what it may be??

some of the bone structure and possible scales dose not look right. I do see small teeth I think but no gills to make me think it’s a fish like my other finds. These piece was found higher up in the quarry so I’m asking for some serious help.

thanks everyone

It is 3-1/4” long and 2-1/8” wide. I love the prepping part as my skills are getting better as I go. I’m still trying to figure out what to seal them with but I’ve been using an Elmer’s glue and water mixture that is working well. These are funds from September’s trip to Fossil Safari in Wyoming

Nice work!

I would wager that the skull is from a Phareodus.

Hi

You mention sealing your fossil. Look up Paraloid, you get it in granules and dissolve it in acetone  different strengths serve either as a preservative coating or a blue when stronger. Museums use it, not water soluble so keep the fossils in good condition. I have been using it for years, does not discolour like PDA. Hope that helps.

Where is it available? Can I get it at Home Depot or Lowe’s? Thanks for the tip. I’ve had pretty good success with the glue/water combination.

I was was thinking of using an epoxy resin because I wanted to cover the whole piece but that need to be done fast before the resin started to set so I stayed away from that. For my smaller pieces it’s good.

Hi,

I purchased mine in a small tub online. I do not live in the USA but I do not think it would be available in a high street store. You do not need a lot so do not invest in a huge amount, mix up just enough to use as the acetone will evaporate. It dries really quickly so clean your brush in neat acetone afterwards, use a wooden handle brush as plastic will melt. On line will give you instructions on ratios to use.

Your fish skull looks like a Mioplosus.

Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

@Twinlukers

Consider Butvar 76. See my post for my favorite bottle plus a link to a source for the Butvar (and other consolidants such as Paraloid B 72):
