TqB
After the last one (link here: fish skull ) turned out to be a nice skull, I'm wondering if anyone could ID this bit? It's very 3D and hard to photograph without image stacking so I've given three views. Phosphatic nodule, Brigantian (U. Mississippian) marine shale, Co. Durham, UK. counterpart: Tarquin
Fossildude19
Another skull fragment, perhaps. Maybe an operculum? 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." jdp
I was thinking coelacanth quadrate or preoperculum. Could be something else though. Pretty angular for a paleoniscoid operculum though.

westcoast
@TqB Did you ever get a positive ID for this? Edited September 26, 2022 by westcoast

I donated this and a few other pieces from the same bed as the skull (which turned out to be coelocanth brain case). Sam Giles mentioned that one of them, presumably this, was a shoulder girdle. The others were mostly sarcopterygian scales of various sorts. 3 Tarquin
