Tyler Matters
I got a tooth that I found in a river or creek in central Iowa. I'm not sure exactly where I found it, just that I found it in the water. I was wondering if it is a bison tooth, but I can't tell the difference between bison and cow teeth. I found a partial bison skull with the horns in a creek I go to, so it wouldn't surprise me if it is a bison. I included a picture of the front, back, and grinding surface. Thanks for any help. Harry Pristis
This appears to be half of a horse upper cheek tooth. These tend to shear along the planes of the tooth enamel, that is, along the long axis of the tooth. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Tyler Matters
I think you are right. It seems to match some horse teeth I looked up. It is rock, not like bone. I know horses in the Americas died out 8,000 to 12,000 years ago and reintroduced by the Spanish in the 16th century. I learned a little bit. I had no idea horses went extinct here.
