Top tips for your Clip-on lens for phones

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I have been really getting into Macro Photography. I only have a phone and a very cheap Macro lens. I have been recommending  the clip-on lens quite a bit to members. A few of you purchased the lens but could not get the best out of it. So I have decided to add a few tips.

Bobby’s Top Tips Macro style.

1. Always place the objects you’re photographing on a steady flat surface. Do not hold the object, as there is too much movement for a macro lens, which can cause the object to be blurry.

2. Sit still at a table to take your photos,  and if possible, rest your arms on the table to steady the camera by holding your phone with both hands.

3. Don’t use any zoom function on the camera phone, merely move the Macro lens towards and away from the object that is been photographed until it comes into crisp focus. The phone zoom is not really designed to be used with a clip-on Macro lens, and will add noise to the image very easily .

4. Keep as still as you can when pressing the shutter button. Take multiple pictures, sometimes I take 10 photos just to get one good image

5. Lighting:  make sure you have an even source of strong light . Outside in good conditions, or purchase a daylight bulb, and use  it in an Anglepoise lamp.

Without good lighting, your photo will be blurred.

And that's about it.  With a good camera phone a cheap lens you can get fantastic closeups.

I hope this helps.

All the best,

Bobby

Thanks for posting these tips. :) I have always used the zoom function with my macro lens. I’m now thinking that could be where my problem lies with getting clear photos.

No name brand, per se.

Mrs R. gave it me for an Easter gift.

Money well spent she said.

Thanks Tim and Dave.

It has opened a new and different interesting way for me to enjoy my fossil collecting.  I also like the fact I am achieving good images without a good quality camera.

I really like the fact I pushing the capabilities of my mobile phone.

Good fun in the garden too.

The spider doesn’t quite look real to me with all of the usually unseen details in such sharp, magnified view. I can see why this would be one if your favorite photos. :)

Hi all one last trick up my sleeve. The great @Nimravis taught me this cool trick but you need to have an iPhone. Go into your pictures choose the photograph that you want to enlarge a bit of.

Press the edit icon and  the icon that I have hi-lighted in yellow.

Then choose the markup

Then choose the magnifier

Place the magnifier over your image

The blue button on the circle makes the circle bigger or smaller. The green button zooms in or out just move the buttons like turning a dial .

A great little tool . Have fun

It is amazing the hidden details that are revealed by a Macro lens. It has opened up a new way for me to enjoy and understand fossil.  Photographed this yesterday
