A Rather Nice Serrata !!!

RJB

Recommended Posts

Ive been wanting to get some fish done for a few years now.  I have about 5 days of good weather left so since I got the abrasive unit up and running I started on this one.  Its a Serrata from the Green River Formation and is in some real nasty rock.   Its slow going and I figured I would use 50/50 bicarb/dolomite and cut back on the dolomite when I got to the 'thinner' things.  Ha!!!  I still had some of the 50/50 when I got to the gut and some of scale covered areas both above and below the spine and low and behold, it worked for those areas too!!!  This really tuff hard rock makes for some really hard bones and such!!!  I,,,,,,,,, am a happy camper.  I still have a few hours left to finish this up, but its turning out purty dang good.

Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt
behind the trailer, my desert
Them red clay piles are heaven on earth
I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

I think this thing looks pretty cool unprepped as well.

But I know you will work your magic on It and make it stunning.

Do you have a portable x-ray in your shop, or do you just "know"?

I would assume it is a Priscacara serrata rather than P. liops based on its size.

I see, you were commenting on @RJB‘s comment about having a few hours left. After prepping enough of these fish, one starts to get an idea of how much time they take whilst working on them.

I can say that layer he’s working with is crazy hard stuff. Everything in it takes much longer to prep but the preservation is amazing.

Took a bit longer than I had anticipated.  Once I got to the dorsal spines I lost a bit of bone and had a minor heart attack!!!  I stopped, turned of the vacuum, turned off the unit and went over to the other prep bench and applied glue.  I had to so that several times but I saved all the spines.  I cant wait to see this guy on the wall.   Im not going to do anything to tidy up the edges.  Im going to leave it as is just to show how it came from the quarry.   One more project completed!  On to the next.

That turned out great!

Is the bottom cap material difficult to split, compared to the 18 inch layer?

Sweet fish Ron, I especially like how the pectoral fin is displayed on this fish.  Looks like is swimming.
