Dubious narwhale fossil

I hardly dare to ask, ...

Here is an online offer from someone without even a single feedback, claiming to offer one of the rarest things there is:

a piece of narwhale tusk.

Looks like flint or agate to me.

maybe good for a laugh?

Moved to "Is it Real" .

Also, added pictures, and removed link.

The Fossil Forum does not allow links to commercial sellers, or verbiage from their advertisements.

Only pictures, please. ;)

Does the seller say what about it makes him think this is a narwhal tusk? It seems pretty featureless to me...

I do not see any structure that can claim a tusk from an narwhale or whatever. In addition, morphology does not match anything. I am strongly inclined to think that it is only a geological occurrence.

Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question!

Narwhal tusk is actually tooth material so there would be no bone structure. Also, their dentin is on the exterior and would quickly weather leaving only enamel behind. That being said, I also don't see anything to make me say it is more than a rock. Narwhal tusks are also rather twisted, exhibiting multiple lines like a bumpy candy cane. The rather blurry photos appear to be opposite of this with a few grooves.

Thanks for the post, and I hope you don't mind my attempt at humor. Narwhals always make me think of unicorns. I'd be awfully surprised if this turned out to be a narwhal tusk but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong and surprised. And now I've learned more about narwhal tusks too. Thanks.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.
