And some really nice bivalve steinkerns. Some of them are super shiny!

A cool little fossil oyster. One of the few fossils that wasn't pyritized.

A really cool gastropod. Not a steinkern! I was really surprised to find this one...

Probably my favorite find: an absolutely gorgeous ammonite/nautiloid, with the absolute most amazing colors!

Red on the outside, then towards the center a burst of rainbow-colored golden gleam. Such a shame that the center isn't preserved!

Some cool belemnites

The belemnites aren't pyritized, unlike the rest. I asked someone at Naturalis about this and she said that it's because belemnite rostra are generally already very highly crystallized, and that therefore there isn't any "space" left for pyrite to take over.

Another one of my favorite finds: a cool little clam fossil! I think it's an Inoceramid, which is cool because I don't have many :D

I think your "nautiloids" are a different type of ammonite.  Deep constrictions, such as the ones they display, are characteristic of some ammonites such as the desmocerids.  On the other hand, I am not aware of them being present on nautiloids.  Those constrictions are not suture lines, they are a type of ornament.

Looks like a fun place to collect.  I've added it to my "wish list".  I'll wait to book my plane ticket until after I win the lottery tonight. :D

And then finally this: diplobelenid belemnites, probably Conoteuthis sp!

Apparently, these are very rare finds!!! Thanks to Tarquin @TqB for IDing these!

So that sums up this report about this incredibly successful and fun hunt in the clay banks of Carniol!

Here's a box I made for all the finds. It's pretty full! :ighappy:

Ok thanks. I'll put them up in the Fossil ID soon for a more narrow ID.

It definitely is a fun place to collect at. Hence why I'll probably be going back next year! :yay-smiley-1:

About that lottery ticket, all I can say is... :fingerscrossed:

Wonderful report and pictures, Max!

I am jealous that you got to find all of those small ammonites. :)

Thank you for letting us come along. ;)

Thanks Tim! Glad you enjoyed.

PS: sorry for the crappy pictures of the finds. Most are very small and it can be hard to take good pictures. If you wanna see more pictures of any specimen, let me know and I'll make you some better pictures of them with my lens!

Many lovely finds! It reminds me of the pyritized ammonites, gastropods, and bivalves in the Del Rio clay of Texas, though your’s is a bit older.

I agree that what look like nautiloids are probably ammonites with constrictions, though I don’t know what variety they are. In the picture with the two “nautiloids”, I can see the outline of complex sutures at the aperture of the left specimen. I wonder if the first specimen is a different species than the last two, since the first seems to have more constrictions than the other two. The first specimen and the specimen on the left in the second set seem to be about the same size, yet I can count 9 constrictions on the former and only 5 on the later. Either way, all three are exquisite, especially the first one!

Those are Holcophylloceras guettardi ammonites.

I was there myself many years ago and had similar success as well as at other sites in the area. Seems like there's a never ending supply of fossils in the Provence. I'd strongly suggest that you give your finds a treatment against pyrite disease as soon as possible, since some of them may soon start to disintegrate if you don't.
