Weird Bone, Bone Valley Florida Find

Bone Daddy

Recommended Posts

This is an oddball that I am having trouble identifying. Does anyone know what this is?

It was found in the Peace River, Bone Valley formation, Hawthorn Group, Florida in mixed Miocene/Pliocene/Pleistocene deposits.

Black cube is 1cm square.

Thanks!

For some reason my brain wants to say its part of a vertebra....

Hoping the bone folks will come along soon and provide the correct answer...

Have a good look at the smooth side for cut marks as I suspect this is a modern cut bone that has quickly been coloured by tannin in the water.

Also place on a mirror to get a better look at what the vertebra would have looked like whole.

Good idea about the mirror. I will try that. I suspected this might be a partial vertebra - nothing else made much sense. And yes, it does appear more recent than fossilized. I was hoping somebody might have a general idea of what type of critter this might be, to narrow down the possibilities.
