belemniten
In this thread I wanna share some fossils from Holzmaden, which I found partly years ago but prepped recently with my new tools. I will not show only bones but also belemnites and other fossils from Holzmaden. All the finds are from the quarry Kromer. Hopefully I will be able to extend this thread step by step! So for today I want to show three bones from the posidionia shale from Holzmaden. Firstly this 3 cm long Ichthyosaur vertebra. Here is a picture of the unprepped piece: As you can see there was only the cross section visible so it was a kinda hard work. I think until now the prep took about 2 hours and I will probably prep it a bit more... but here is a picture of the current state of the vertebra: I am very satisfied with the result until now! Especially because I didn't lost too much of the fossil material in the areas where I had to glue it. 10 Many greetings from Germany ! Have a great time with many fossils Regards Sebastian
belemniten
The next one is a 13 cm long Ichthyosaur rib part. Unprepped: Tried to mark the position of the rib(sorry for the bad picture) 4 Many greetings from Germany ! belemniten
And here is it prepped: There is some sort of very hard pyrite on the rib which will not disappear not matter with how much power I am sandblasting. Maybe someone has an idea how to remove it? 9 Many greetings from Germany ! Have a great time with many fossils Regards Sebastian
belemniten
And last but not least for now this 6 cm long unidentified crocodile bone. I think I already showed this one in this state: Already prepped this one with my air pen a bit and now I think I am finished with this piece for now: I prepped all the pieces with the same method. Firstly I removed most of the matrix around the bones with my air pen and then I did the fine work with my sandblasting machine. Feel free to comment whatever you think Thanks!! 6 Many greetings from Germany ! Have a great time with many fossils Regards Sebastian
Heteromorph
Nice specimens, especially the vertebrae! Your prep results are superb. I am just starting to try to prep and am always looking to TFF to help me as I get started. I am excited to see what else you have in store for us. How long have you been preparing fossils?
Ludwigia
Nice jobs, Sebastian. That croc bone is something special. I think you’ll have to leave the pyrite the way it is. If you try to remove it mechanically, you’ll probably damage the bone and any attempt with chemicals would probably destroy it. 3 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Thank you very much! I think I got my air scribe about half a year ago and I got my sandblasting machine about 1 month ago. But before I already tried to prep with hammer, chisels and needles. So I am also more or less at the beginning but I learned a lot of other people! On 3.11.2018 at 2:13 AM, Ludwigia said: Nice jobs, Sebastian. That croc bone is something special. Thanks for the help with the pyrite. I will leave the rib as it is. But I am sure that many guys here can help you if you take some pictures and post it (if you didnt already did that). Good luck on your prep job!! On 3.11.2018 at 7:04 PM, Natalie81 said: Great job! Thanks @Natalie81! I am looking forward to see your prepped Ichthyosaur vertebrae Today I finished two pieces. Firstly a kinda interesting combination out of an ammonite, a belemnite and a partial Ichtyosaur rib. It wasn't very difficult to prep but all in all it took about 3 hours. The belemnite is about 10 cm long and the partial rib is about 11 cm long. Here is a picture of the unprepped rib: And here are pictures of the prepped piece: 7 Many greetings from Germany ! belemniten
The belemnite: And the rib: The other piece isn't spectacular. It's a 9 cm long belemnite. Belemnites are very common there and because of that they are a good practice to become a feeling of the tools I use. Both pieces were found by me last year in the quarry Kromer in Holzmadan. 7 Many greetings from Germany ! jpc
Cool Stuff. How often do you go to the Kromer Quarry. I have been there twice and not found any bones. Both times I was with a group of people and nobody found bones. The croc bone is interesting. What makes you ID it as croc? Could it be an ichthytosaur neural spine?
Uncle Siphuncle
My wife and I loved that quarry too. Only been there once for a couple hours, and we didn't find any bones either. We'd go back in a second though. The ammonites, for us, were unique and wunderbar! Grüße, Daniel A. Wöhr aus Südtexas "To the motivated go the spoils." So this year I was about 8 times there and last year about 30 times. Bones arent common but if you know where you have to search its not impossible to find one. Until now I personally found more teeth there than bones. I will ask some experts what they think about the bone. Thanks for the hint!
