MeargleSchmeargl
It has been WAAAAY too long since I went to this site. Good thing is, according to plan, I should be going with a friend tomorrow. Can't wait! 1 Every single fossil you see is a miracle set in stone, and should be treated as such. Nimravis
In between cracking open Mazon Creek concretions, I was soaking and splitting Georgia matrix, here are my finds so far. Here are a couple tiny ones- Here is a very nice one with an exoskeleton- This piece is still wet from soaking. I usually never post partials, but this one is nice-
Nimravis
I have not posted to this in a while, so I thought that with a lot of snow outside I would open some Conasauga matrix that I recently brought back from Georgia. I only cracked a couple of pieces open and below are my finds. I will put the other smaller pieces from today into water and soak and split them. Part and Counterpart- Mortality Piece There is a section at this location that has a harder gray shale that also contains trilobites. A hacksaw also works well to cut these pieces down to size. Sometimes these contain very nice examples, this piece is not one of those times. Zoomed up-
KimTexan
Very cool finds. The mortality plate is cool. How many are there in it?

connorp
Do you do anything to preserve these? The shale looks so fragile in some places, it looks like you could wipe away some of these trilos with your finger.

That is true with some of the pieces that have the exoskeleton preserved, (see below) but the rest are really stable and I just stack them on top of each other. I do not put anything on them to stabilize them, if it is real nice, I keep it separate from the others. I believe @Peat Burns has stabilized some, he may jump on this and say what he uses. I like splitting and cutting them versus soaking the matrix. The splitting method gives me a thicker piece which is easier to handle. I do soak the thinner pieces because trilobites can still be found, and many times they are real nice, but very thin and delicate to handle. I discuss the fragility and how the consolidant is applied in the following thread: Conasauga Shale
Nimravis
Here are a couple pieces that I split open tonight, I am not finding anything with the soaking methods. Seem like the matrix that I have is not very fossiliferous.

Tony, That is why I like breaking the matrix while I am at the site. This time I had to take some back because the river was so high, I really had no room to work on it. Nothing like the instant gratification and adrenaline influx, of on site discovery, but it is nice to have the distraction for the times You can't get out to hunt. Definite cure for cabin fever. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Tidgy's Dad
Some of these are really nice. Even the last batch has one in the middle of the pictures with a lovely exoskeleton. 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
Nimravis
It is 3 degrees out with a wind chill of -9 degrees, so after working out I decided to soak a few small pieces of matrix and came away with a couple pieces. Counterpart-
