“Beyond Fossilized” Bones?

InfoHungryMom

Recommended Posts

I found these “two styles” of what I believe are unusually fossilized bones on the beach in Tel Aviv.  Rather than ask for your input on them individually, I am looking for an idea of “the process” that occurred, and then will ask about what they are (please feel free to answer both at once....).

The items on the left are a very pale tan.  The ones on the right are the ones that have me totally baffled.  They are more of a light gray.

Thank you!

Weathered/water-worn limestone, I'm afraid. Maybe some concretions on the right.

A number look exactly like bones I have found, only “coated”.  Coincidence, or the nature of the area and/or materials?

Thanks again!

I don't see any real bone texture, or bone morphology to these items.

So I am going to go with coincidental semi-likeness to bones.

Hi hndmarshall!  Where did you find yours?

found mine in gravel loads from the Brazos River west of Houston Texas.

here are a few I have others also but had these on the golf cart... you can see where some look like they had stems or like you say bones? in them ...some are quite large and other small seem to be sandstone concretions?

I still think some can’t be completely geological...  many of the ones I had look extremely similar to seagull bones10FACF7A-C617-4A9C-9A7E-095619F369F9.thumb.jpeg.ed315b4914a550333d4d4c41342f0939.jpeg

these look like they had something encased in them I am tempted to crack one of the larger solid ones to see what is inside

They look like beach-eroded / tumbled sedimentary structures, often found in the Mediterranean coastline. :)

When rocks weather, the softer and/or looser material goes first. The voids could simply have been that, softer or looser area's in the sandstone concretions. As for the concretions themselves, they can look like pretty much anything, even faces. Nature is very artistic, but has a twisted sense of humor.

Um, Dave?  I think that last line was the one used to welcome me with my twisted mind to TFF- and that I shouldn’t worry because you were already here, corrupting the masses!

Marshall, it figures!  So once again instead of rocky bones I have rock & bones...

I think we all find something that looks like something else. For example... my "sushi"..

Or my petrified "guitar pick"..

More than anything else, it's just all in how you look at things.

@InfoHungryMom Indeed nature can make it difficult to find fossils and often presents many look-alikes, the shape is an important attribute but also pay close attention to the texture.  Bone, even after fossilization is spongy in cross view and often will stick to your tongue or a wet finger.  Like much of life, learning to find fossils just takes time and practice albeit a great deal of patience is also needed haha.
