I’ll be researching on places to go in the Alamogordo area. I’m not looking for yalls special sites or anything, just maybe a little advice or idea of an area to look into going. The Amateur Paleontologist Posted November 8, 2018 Share Posted November 8, 2018 I'm not sure about collecting laws in New Mexico, but I'm aware that there are outcrops in north-central NM of the Late Triassic Chinle Formation (which has famously yielded remains of primitive dinosaurs including Coelophysis).. There's some really interesting fossil material coming out of there, it's worth lookin' into -Christian Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy! Q. SmittyNM Posted November 15, 2018 Share Posted November 15, 2018 Lots of BLM and Forest Service Land to the North, East and South. You can surface collect on these lands but invertebrates and plants only (No vertebrate collecting). DOD (Don't collect here) land to the West. There is quite a bit of State Trust Land checker boarding within the BLM Lands. You need a permit to access these lands and additional special permits for collecting. Check out the interactive maps from the State Land office: http://www.nmstatelands.org/interactive-maps.aspx for geologic info look at the oil gas and mineral map. It has the ownership info along with the Geologic data. I recommend that you start by turning off all the layers, change the basemap (Upper right button) then turn on Fed and state layers (under Land Status) and then you can turn on the geology layer as needed. Play around and let me know if you have any questions. Unfortunately, I have never collected around there.
