Found a tooth on the beach

Recommended Posts

I found a tooth on the beach, but I am unable to identify the animal to which it belonged to. It has a width of about 1.5inches, so it is fairly large. Anyone who tries to identify it, your help will be much appreciated.

Could you post a picture of the tooth?

I think that may be a shell, not a tooth.

Definitely a piece of a shell.

Not a tooth.

Doesn't really look like a tooth, more like tumbled rock or shell fragment.

Where was it found?

It's definitely not a shell, look at this image. It may be a rock, but this part looks like that part of a tooth where it is attached to the jaw.IMG_20181113_141817.thumb.jpeg.5ba8eca951fac2b3e8bef2bbf54426b7.jpeg

From that angle it almost looks like a banded agate, details on where it was found would help.

You can also try to test hardness with a piece of glass, or put it in acid to see if it fizzes.

Welcome to TFF!

It's an oyster piece unfortunately...

A very worn-out piece. Second picture is a typical example of a sea-worn hinge piece. Oysters can have the craziest shapes, but their hinges are always very recognizable.

Sorry but it's most likely an insignificant find :(

Keep looking, we'd love to see some Indian fossils!

It could be both if it's a fossil.

That's what it looks like to me.

I respectfully disagree.  :)

There is no evidence of enamel on your item.  :(

The growth lines, however, are pretty consistent with shell material. (Heavily water worn, of course. ;) )
