I've been using hypodermic needles in my pin vices for fossil prep which work GREAT.  And maybe I've re-invented the wheel here, but I just discovered body-piercing needles!  These are so much better and cheaper!  $12.99 for a multi-size pack on Amazon.  The shafts are much longer, too, which is great. Easier to acquire by most, also.  Thought I'd share.  Here's the $12.99 mixed-size pack I got.

Me thinks I hear the bounding footsteps of @caldigger as he senses a joke in the room :)

I have used the hypodermic needles myself.  Much better than sewing needles.

I will have to try this.  I find that sewing needles and silicone carbide rods sharpened to different points all have their place.  Might be good to add this tool to my arsenal.

Thanks for the info.

Ive been using the needles(not the used ones lol) we used to use to give our elderly cat subq fluids before she passed. You're absolutely correct that they work splendidly.

I guess it depends upon what you are using it for, but I found the needle too flimsy.

I use these from Harbor Freight.

I use the carving set the most. A couple have sharpened edges. The tips on the other sets are pretty sharp like needles, but not quite as sharp, but they are more sturdy than needles. The straight one I keep sharpening.

The first set is $5.49 the other two are $2.99.

Great idea, Tony, I need some new points for my pin vice, so this is definitely worth a try. :)

Point of information: some of the pins in the multi-pack have a diameter larger than what many of our pin vices will accept, so one may wish to only buy specific gauges ala carte based on the size of his or her respective pin vice(s).
