Venice, Fl Turtle or Gator?

Recommended Posts

I found an interesting fossil on the beach in Venice, FL.   Believe it is either a Turtle scute or an alligator osteoderm. Can anyone help confirm and tell me anything interesting about it?  Thanks for the help!

It's a water turtle marginal bone (from the carapace).  Turtle scutes are thin, keratin coverings of the turtle bone.  Turtle scutes are not preserved as fossils.

Welcome to The Fossil Forum from Texas.

I agree with turtle bone. Harry Pristis knows his Cenozoic bones and teeth and then some. He has a fabulous gallery you may wish to check out. He has fabulous pics of great quality.
