Fossildude19
Thanks to my friend @Jeffrey P ! He had given me some matrix that he collected at the Lower Permian Waurika Oklahoma site on his epic road trip this summer. I have spent some time breaking down the clay matrix, and going through the remaining bits to look for fossils. I've found a few teeth so far, but this was pretty cool. I was putting some hunks of matrix into different solutions to try to break down the clay, and came across this larger solid bit. Upon cleaning it, I realized it mus be a coprolite. It has many inclusions, Orthocanthus teeth, what appear to be bone bits, and fish scales. @Carl @GeschWhat may be interested in this. Enjoy! Matrix from the Lower Permian Wellington - Garbar Complex Note: each square on the background is 5mm by 5mm Coprolite is 2 cm long. 8 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Matrix from the Lower Permian Wellington - Garbar Complex Tim Really nice coprolite! I've broken down a good bit of that clay Permian matrix. I just dried it really well outside in the sun (you can use a conventional oven up to 150 F also but I prefer sun drying) and then soaked it in very hot water overnight to break it down. If there was still clay left, I repeated the drying and very hot water overnight. If for some reason that doesn't work or for a final cleanup, you can use 3% Walmart H2O2, Hydrogen Peroxide, on the stubborn pieces (don't use H2O2 if you already have used other chemicals on the matrix). I wouldn't use any other chemicals on clay (you can use detergents but I never liked using them even low suds detergents). Marco Sr. 1 "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." I was just using H2O2 for a tiny bit of matrix, and water in the other containers. Will be checking on them today, when I get home from work. GeschWhat
That is beautiful! I have quite a few from that area, but haven't seen one with Orthocanthus teeth before. Tim Some denticles, fish teeth and a few other specimens are only 1mm long or less and will fall through window screen. If you don't want to lose them use a .5 mm mesh sieve. How many specimens that are this small size depends on exactly where the matrix was taken from. Marco Sr. 1 "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." ynot
That is a really nice poop You found! PaleoNoel
That's a really cool coprolite! I'm getting more and more interested in the waurika material. I just want to know one thing; what's the legality of collecting the fossils there? I want to go someday (although I have no clue when I'd be able to) but don't want to be breaking any laws in doing so without proper permission. If anyone knows the answer I would love to hear it.
