Sinohydrosaurus authentication

This looks completely fake: carved/painted, to me.

Also, considering that it is illegal to export most vertebrate fossils from China, they get around the law by making "art".

I would keep away, unless you were to get it for very cheap - 20 bucks or so.

I've remarked on the taxonomy of "Sinohydrosarus"( a junior synonym) a while back.

I kinda trust Tim on the recognition of fakes.

Here is what I'm seeing...

So as a piece of artwork, it's nice, ... but they try to pass these off as real fossils. Not cool, in my opinion. :(

Ben,

Could you post a link  to that here?

Might be useful for others to see. :)

i would be suspicious of this specimen  -- it is definitely painted to highlight the "bones". It looks like one of those items frequently for sale at fossil shows - they are all completely perfect and completely articulated -- and--all the same. They're casts, or imprints , made to be sold as originals....probably aren't any bones in there....

These are not casts , nor partially real. They are completely carved and painted.

Like I said, ... nice artwork, but not real fossils, in the least.  :(

*giving birth to live young.

Well you don’t get more thorough than that!

It's definitely a fake. I have had to learn the hard way like many of us on specimens. If it looks that nice and pristine and it's not an outrageous amount of money, then it's going to be fake. I'm not saying you can not find nice quality specimens for an affordable price. But what I am say is if someone was selling a $100k sports car for $15k, that's an obvious red flag. It sucks because you are trying to convince yourself that it is real and you are just getting a crazy deal. But at the end of the day, reality is reality. Just my .02

Yeah. Heeee! I'm always amused to see so many of these PERFECT tiny skeletons. I've never found a totally complete skeleton of anything--always something missing....

Ya that’s not cool to make a person think that the fossil is real
