Conrad
Hello! I am a new mineral enthusiast. I recently purchased an Ammonite. It appears to have water in it. I was wondering if this is a normal occurrence and how old the water might be? Looking forward to hearing everyone’s opinion! Thank you for your time FC408BAE-F931-4BC0-B055-95F91A8E389F.MOV

Fossildude19
The video downloads fine for me. It just isn't embedded in the post. EDIT: I've made it into an animated gif. See the brown area across the ammonite. There is a lighter color that moves with the suture pattern from the inner whorl to the outer. Kind of strange. 6 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Conrad
Thanks for letting me know that the video works! Good to hear. Also thanks for making it into an animated gif so you can easily see what I am talking about. I appreciate it.

Those sutures are definitley an ammonoid. Could it be the minerals were replaced but some of the fluid was trapped inside of one of the chambers? ynot
I think it is an optical illusion and not water in the ammonite. Some minerals are dichromatic, and will change color as the angle of view is changed. 3 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." DeepTimeIsotopes
Maybe something like this occurred. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhydro_agate The water could be millions of years old. Conrad
So what exactly are you saying @UtahFossilHunter ? When it was fossilized it might of had some water in that section of the shell?
Conrad
Woah! Thanks for that link! I’ve had this piece for a couple weeks now and just realized this abnormality. I appreciate all the speedy help!!
Conrad
@ynot I am not sure about it being an optical illusion as it moves like a bubble and you can see where the bubble is at all angels. It might be possible but it really looks as if it is a bubble
ynot
Your ammonite is not an enhydro. Look at the way the bubble moves in the agate as opposed to the way the movement occurs in the ammonite. Also in the ammonite it crosses the septia wall which would not happen with water. Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Fossildude19
Conrad, Does this phenomena occur anywhere else on the ammonite? 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Conrad
No @Fossildude19 but at different angles it does move to the top and I can separate the bubbles.
