cracker2k2
Hi, I found this bone nodule today at Saltwick Bay (UK). I'm quite certain it is bone of some sort, but not sure whether fish or reptile. Could anybody please help me with an ID? Thanks, Mark

The Amateur Paleontologist
Maybe a small reptile bone?? Somehow a partial limb, or even dorsal spinous process or rib? -Christian Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy! Q. Where do dinosaurs study? A. JohnBrewer
I’d like to see an end on photo to see if there is bone structure. The outside does have the striations seen with ichthys John Map of UK fossil sites
cracker2k2
Thanks a bunch for the quick replies guys, much appreciated! I'd love it if this were from an Ichthy... someone else has suggested a Gyrosteus. Some more photos (apologies if they are bad quality, quite tricky to stand under the light and not get a shadow). JohnBrewer
Looks funny to me. When I said ichthy I was thinking rib, somehow it’s not quite right tho. Never heard of Gyrosteus until I looked it up! What part of the Gyrosteus was suggested? Tim @Fossildude19 John Map of UK fossil sites
cracker2k2
No part mentioned specifically (and the guy who made the reference also said it could be reptile rather than fish, so still not a definitive answer). The nodule has about x3 distinct pieces of bone as far as I can tell. The piece where the nodule has split also has a clear curve to it, so has the shape of a rib. Fossildude19
Have no idea, but there may not be enough there to make any kind of determination one way or the other. cracker2k2
Just my luck - after trying to find Icthy bones for so long, I find something that could possibly be 'rarer'... From what I can find online, Gyrosteus has largely only ever been found in this relatively small area of the Whitby coast, and there is practically no information about it! It certainly looked like fish to me when you showed me it on the beach. Gyro (fish) is quite common in the whitby area. Still bone either way. It tends to be quite flakey and hard to prep. I could be wrong as i’m still learning also! Yorkshire Coast Fossil Hunter
