I agree. The thing is, roots make a fine template for interestingly shaped iron concretions. Finding some residual carbon would be a better indication of it though.

The Natchez Trace in TN runs entirely on paleozoic rocks that are formed from marine sediments, so fossil roots are very unlikely to be present. Could be a cast formed in an animal burrow, or a suggestively shaped concretion.

There is a high amount of ironstone present in the area, also iron concretions. I agree with the others, being a concretion with iron content.
