Nanotyrannus Tooth

Hey everyone,

I am thinking of buying this 1.38 inch Nanotyrannus tooth for $315, but am not sure if it is worth it? Can you please tell me if I should buy it or not. Thanks!

On tff normally we don't give appraisals. And yes we need more info and pics to ID it.

Life started in the ocean. And so did my interest in fossils;).

It’s somewhat overpriced, esp. for a tiny tooth, though people often seem to get outrageous prices for isolated teeth without provenance. Then there’s the fact that Nanotyrannus may not be a valid taxon. I mention that only to say that, if part of the justification for the price is that it represents a “rare” species, that may or may not be the case.

The exterior serrations are missing. The seller purposefully took photos from the “good” angle and is trying to hide the fact that there are flaws on this tooth.

No, it isn't worth that price.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

How much does everyone think this tooth is actually worth? I would love to know that information! It would be really helpful. Thanks!

We do not allow appraisals on the open boards.

Feel free to discuss this via PM.  ;)

Nano tooth however it's hard to tell due to the angle the first photo has been taken. The bottom looks compressed so leaning more towards nano. The serrations are really worn on the other side of the tooth (second photo) it almost appears to be missing but the serrations are not. Personally, I think you could find similar teeth in better condition for that price (i.e.the enamel could be in better condition, serrations visible on both sides etc) however it's all about personal preference. Still a cool tooth despite this as I love theropod teeth.

Looks more chipped than it is worn. Once again, most of these photos don’t focus on the damaged part.  I’ve had problems with where portions of the tooth (even an entire half) were completely missing once in my possession and didn’t expect this because the photos didn’t highlight these problems.

From my own mistakes, I recommend always asking for pictures from angles that are never provided.

Yes chipped, you can even see it on the pic below looking at the shape of the top of the tooth.
