DPS Ammonite
Where is this from, age and formation? Why do you think that it was burned? I see some black matter on the outside that may be coal. Partially petrified wood covered in coalified wood is rather common especially in coal deposits. Close up photos of the wood and the black areas will help determine what it is. 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. Innocentx
I think the interruptions in the 'grain' are what make this look like possible stromatolite, but these kinds of deviations from straight wood grain could be accounted for if this were from root area of tree. The location where this was found will be everything to understanding this piece. Whichever it turns out to be, it's an interesting item! 2 "Journey through a universe ablaze with changes" Phil Ochs

Innocentx
It also looks like a piece of what I think may be phyllite(does not fizz in vinegar) which I picked up on my trip to New Mexico. I'm looking forward to more information on location. 2 "Journey through a universe ablaze with changes" Phil Ochs
Echinoid
Some areas of the specimen do look like coal - they are circled in red. @Cmbossman9, could you please post some photos of the yellow circled area, as well as the top and bottom?
