GigEm2002
I have two fossils I was given by a family member when I was a kid that I believe were “surface finds” finds from South Texas. A local museum curator said they were from some kind of a mammal. Can anyone tell me what these are from and what part of the animal they are? One is a socket joint and the other is triangular in cross section.
Innocentx
Nice bones. Not much left for ID, though. Perhaps someone here is familiar enough to know. "Journey through a universe ablaze with changes" Phil Ochs
GigEm2002
Oh and to be more specific I think these were from the Coastal Bend area around Corpus Christi- I think the area has a large number of Pleistocene mammal fossils and this may be why the fellow at the museum thought the fossils came from a mammal.
darrow
I think the second one is part of a scapula but from what I can't say. Darrow
jpc
I think the second one is a distal radius, based on the shape of the articular surface.
Scylla
The first looks like part of a turtle shell.
GigEm2002
I didn’t think of this being a forearm bone. My wife the biologist thinks the second one looked a little like the knee joint of a lower leg bone of an herbivore like a deer. GigEm2002
The white one does look like part of a turtle shell. Apparently giant tortoise fossils are common in that area. Makes sense.
