What is a compaction cone, pray tell??

It is a cone shaped fracture that occurs when an object impacts a brittle substance. (bb or rock hitting class will often cause one).

The shape can be affected by weakness in the stratification of a rock.

Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys."

Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough."

Whoa, 4 years ago! I had to go back to the first page to find that...

I thought that was called a shatter cone, but do you mean to say that this is a (distorted) cone caused by the impact of something into the solidified rock, and not something that formed when the sediment was still soft?  @TqB ?

I thought I'd add this image from our recent visit to the Calvert Marine Museum. It shows that they have a good sense of humor and aim to entertain as well as inform their visitors. Got a chuckle out of us when we saw it.

Cheers.

One of my hundreds of dinosaur eggs from the Francis Creek Shale Member of Mazon Creek. You name the tetrapod, I've got the egg. I believe @Nimravis has complete nests of any species you can name.

When I discovered jurassic Dino-Hound, a truly unique vegetarian, there were still some half-chewed petrified pine branches sticking out from its open jaws.

Fossils just don't get any better than this!

Alas, I had to leave this find behind. It just was a bit too large and heavy to carry to the car.

Well spotted!

Now that was a formidable beastie--despite its non-carnivorous tendencies. :P

Would be a great POTM entry if we had a Pareidolia Of The Month contest. ;)

Cheers.

Why don't you encase it in cement so that some future rockhound will actually find a fossil mushroom, for once - one that resembles something else at the same time?  :P
