Last Friday  and last Sunday I visited the quarry Mistelgau in Bavaria. Its since 2005 abandoned and a very beautiful geotop. But you can still find fossils there! It's possible to find various Jurassic fossils like ammonites, gastropodes, marine reptile bones ....

I was mainly interested in finding some Ichthyosaur bones and all in all I was quite successful.
Here is a picture of the quarry:

Belemnits can be found everywhere ...

I found 6 Ichthyosaur vertebrae and 5 paddle bones. The vertebrae:

The two associated vertebrae are my favourite ones. Unprepped:

And prepped:

3.JPG.e26669fe89c80d3af848c88da683cad8.JPG

The preparation wasn't too easy. It took 3 or 4 hours.

Some more detailed pictures of vertebrae:

Then the paddle bones:

This one is my favourite one:

Beside these bones I also found some ammonites. Here are some of them:

I assume that they are mostly Cotteswoldia.
And the second favourite find was this ammonite. It's pyritized and very good preserved.

Thanks for watching and a happy New year!!

By the way what do you guys think about the pictures with the ruler? Are they better than pictures without one?

Great finds as usual Sebastian, as you know Lower / Middle Jurassic marine vertebrates are of interest to me.

Judging by the shape of the middle bottom digit “blue arrow” (if not fragmented) it would appear to be an Ulna. Compared to the size of the other digit indicated by the “red arrow” that would be almost certainly one of the carpals.

Can you put a species to the Ichthyosaur?

Here’s an Ulna from my collection for comparison from the (Ichthyosaur Ophthalmosaurus icenicus)

Your scale bar is fine, I find better results that eliminate the glare if the rule is finished in Matt design as opposed to a shiny one.

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

Thanks for the ID help. Here is a detailed picture of the one, which you marked with the blue arrow:

I am not sure if its really an Ulna. For me it looks like a damaged paddle bone.

I am also not sure about the species. Have to look it up, but I think its kinda difficult with only isolated bones.

Thank you :) I will see if I can find another ruler. Good point!!

Really nice finds Sebastian. I loved that little quarry in Mistelgau even though I didn't find any Ichthyosaur material when I was there last year. Looks like you found some nice ones. Those ammonites are also beautiful. Thanks for posting this.

Wow! You did very well!  Personally I'm most fond of the ammonites, but the ichthyosaur bones are great as well.

I wish we had access to some Jurassic over here.

I'd be interested to see what you might think the damaged side is.

I took a closer look recently and I think you are right! It seems to be not fragmented and then it should be an Ulna. I am currently not at home but I will post some pictures when I am back (next week).
