I have a few of those myself and love them, my wife also found some cheap battery powered press to turn on lights for them as well:)

Do these hold a good amount of weight?

You can put plenty of weight on the bottom shelf but the others are glass, the heaviest things in mine are mammoth teeth. You'd probably be safe to put 15 pounds or so on them I would think:)

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

Those are wonderful display cabinets. We have an identical one in our dining room. Have you considered fabricating some multi-step risers to exploit the available vertical space? With some thought to scale, you could use such a system to viewing advantage; if not more specimens present, at least better visibility of all. What you have already done looks great, but you may be able to squeeze more from those utile cabinets.

I'll probbably add some plexiglas stands to make some hight differences in the display. there is already one in one of the cabinnets and I'm realy pleased by the results.

growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

The last 2 pictures of the cabbinets

( the 2 cabinnets with Devonian material will get their own thread )

2 Shelves with Pleistocene material:

the 1st one are all bits of Whooly Rhino. (  Coelodonta antiquitatis )

the 2nd shelf contains bits of Pleistocene fauna: ox, bison, deer, mammoth, beaver and horse.
